In our second post of the series, today we have simple and stunning balcony wall decor ideas. Whether you have a small barely-there balcony in an apartment, or are lucky enough to have a large porch or terrace, you can easily make your balcony the star of your home.
Balcony Wall Decor:
There’s nothing more relaxing than being in nature. And there is nothing like having your own little patch of green to do that, even if it’s just a balcony. And there are so many ways that we can decorate that balcony, that we decided to start ground up. In our last post, we focused on how you can decorate your balcony floor. Today we have an amazing collection of balcony wall decor ideas.
(1) Paint it Bright:
The simplest, most straight forward and most obvious way is to use paint. Use a bright colour, with a texture if you like, and you don’t need much else to make a statement wall.
I love the way all the blue furnishings contrast the bright pink wall here.
Here all the blue of the walls and furniture is broken by the bursts of pink flowers.
And I love the way patterned, monochromatic floor balances the plain, bright colour on these walls.
(2) Use Wall Planters:
Whatever else you do or do not put in your balcony, an absolute MUST is the plants. But they don’t necessarily have to go on the floor. Especially if you have a small balcony with little floor space, use your walls to fill it up with greens.
You could use simple rings or brackets to fix regular plant pots on the wall.
You could get some interesting planters, so the wall becomes as much about the planter as about the plant.
Or you could use bigger planters to grow thicker foliage on your walls.
There are lots of pretty wall planters available online. The ones below are just a few that I liked.

(3) Use Wall Shelves:
Planters can be a little restrictive, in the sense that you can only have plants in them. If you want more flexibility, use simple shelves along the walls. You could still use them only for plants and move your plants around easily.
Or you could mix in some decoratives and candles and make it more interesting.
These boxes on my balcony wall work as a bit of both, and I love mixing things around here ever so often.

And if you don’t want to bother fixing up wall shelves, use a tall bookshelf against the wall and fill it up with plants!
(4) Trellis:
A trellis is another great way to get your plants on to your walls. Something like money plant will easily use the support of a trellis to climb up and spread all over the wall.
Additionally, you can use the trellis to hang little lanterns and other decoratives.
A more solid trellis in wood or wrought iron can be used to hang planters, and is also a decorative by itself.
A few ready trellises, like this pretty one, are now available online.

(5) Artificial Grass Cladding:
Another simple balcony wall decor idea is to make a green wall using artificial grass. You could cover up the entire wall…
Or just a part of it to add the extra green.
Artificial grass rolls are available in different sizes and textures.

(6) Railing Planters:
The greener you can make your balcony, the prettier it will look. So why not use the railings to grow plants too.
This is a great way to get plants into the tiniest of balconies.
And since the railings get the most sun, even in a covered balcony, it’s a great place to grow some flowering plants.
Trustbasket has a large collection of pretty and affordable railing planters.

(7) Wall Lights:
The walls are also a great place to put in some soft accent lighting for your balcony. The play of light and shadow always adds a bit of drama to any space.
You could use garden lights to add to the outdoorsy feel of your balcony.
Or hang actual lanterns and light up your balcony in candle light.
Lanterns are easily available all over. Here I’ve only picked 3, each in a different style.

(8) Hammocks:
Doesn’t a hammock always make you think of a vacation? Imagine having a vacation spot in your own home.
A couple of solid hooks on the walls should do the trick, and you’ll have a resort in your own balcony in no time.
Hangit has a huge range of hammocks in a large variety that you can buy from the comfort of your home. You could go for the regular white or choose from a large selection of colours.
(9) Anything That Makes You Happy:
Yes, anything at all. Just like there are so many options for wall decor in your home, you can choose to use almost anything as balcony wall decor. This is especially true if your balcony is covered. Else do make sure that your decor item is weather proof and will not be spoilt by rain or sun.
You could use jute or cane floor mats as wall hangings.
Raina, here, has brightened up her balcony wall with a rug.
And I’ve used a collection of travel memories as balcony wall decor here.

Hi Rittika !
Reading your blog has become a morning ritual for me (like reading newspaper is for some people)❤️
How do you think is the idea of using wall stickers in balcony. I stay on the 18th floor and it’s dangerous to hang frames or planters because at times it is very windy.
I recently ordered cactus stickers my balcony. Do you think it will look good ??
Would love to hear your opinion!!
🙂 Love your morning ritual, Pallavi!
I assume you mean cactus wall decals? Decals can look amazing. But I’ve never personally used them in a balcony and not sure how they will work with the rain / if they get wet…
Splendid ideas rittika! All your posts are so beautiful gladening and insightful!
Thanks Rita.. so glad you’re enjoying them! 🙂
Hey Rittika, of all your posts,I love the ones on balconies the most. Your picks are most cozy and inviting. Exactly how balconies should be.
Thanks Rashi.. I wish each one of them was mine! 🙂
