I am going to start this post on wicker decor ideas right at the beginning, with the most basic question. What is wicker?
How many of you have wondered whether the terms wicker, rattan and cane all mean the same thing or are each different? This has forever confused me, and so the first thing I did when I started writing this post was look up the difference.
What Is Wicker?
Originally, wicker was a technique of weaving. The material used for this weaving was any natural, plant based material, such as rattan or cane. Now the term wicker is used to describe all of these – the weaving technique, the materials used (which now also include ‘synthetic’ wicker) and the products made.
Not so confusing after all, right?
Ok, so now that we’ve sorted that out, let’s start with how we can use wicker in our homes.
Wicker Decor Ideas
I love using wicker. I guess that’s kind of obvious. You’ve seen me use a lot of wicker decor in my work, and I would honestly love to use more. And I don’t mean just the furniture.
I would love to try out different ways of using wicker in the spaces I design. Which is one of the main reasons I decided to write this post. So that I have a ready library of inspiration to look up every time I think wicker decor!
I’m starting today’s list with what I already know…
1 – Wicker Furniture
You’ve seen me use lots of beautiful wicker furniture in my own home.
You are welcomed into my home, in the foyer, with these beautiful wicker chairs that we have owned for more than a decade.
And I love the old world charm of these upholstered cane chairs that grace our living room.
We also used some exquisite wicker furniture pieces in our Modern Tropical Living Room.
This chair, for instance, is super stylish and extremely comfortable.
And I can stare at the marvellous weave of this sofa back forever!
2 – Wicker Panelled Wardrobes
Another place I’ve been wanting to use cane for a long time now is on wardrobes. We’ve planned it a couple of times but for one reason or another, it hasn’t worked out yet. These pics here make me want to get started right away..
Natural cane is a classic that will easily fit into almost any space.
Cane looks beautiful with white too.
And makes a stunning contrast with black.
I think this black wicker is a great idea too, and would love to experiment with this.
Being a neutral in it’s natural shade, wicker would actually compliment just about any colour.
3 – Wall Panelling
While we are talking of panelling wardrobes, why not the walls themselves?
I’ve used cork sheet panelling on the book shelf wall in our Modern Tropical Living Room. These magnificent images want me to try the same with wicker too.
The advantage of using most natural materials is that the keep a space feeling light and cool in the summers and warm and cozy in cold temperatures.
If the whole wall is too much to handle, highlighting just a part of it with the wicker is a good option.
Love how this wall has been broken down into separate panels to break the monotony.
4 – Wicker Clad Ceilings
Just as with the walls, cladding the ceilings with wicker is great for hot and cold climates.
It’s also a great way to bring the outdoors in and looks amazing in transitional spaces.
Love how the wicker, wood trim and paint make for so many textures in this recessed ceiling.
5 – Wicker Screens
If you want to enjoy wicker decor without any permanent changes then using wicker screens is a great option.
Not only are they fantastic room dividers, which is their original function…
But they also make for wonderful wall decor.
6 – Rugs
Another good way to bring wicker into a space is by using woven rugs.
They look splendid by themselves and also make a good base to layer other rugs on.
This jute rug has been just the right hint of texture and colour that was needed in my black and white studio.
7 – Blinds
Wicker blinds are a useful option not only for outdoor spaces, but for indoor spaces like bathrooms and kitchens where fabric dressing of windows is avoidable.
Like wood, you can polish them in various shades to match the rest of your furniture.
The texture of the wicker contrasts well with soft fabric finish, making it a great option for layering your window dressing.
And wicker is easy to use with all colours.
8 – Swings
Considering wicker fits in so well with an outdoor ambience, it’s the perfect material to use for swings too.
Whether you go in for the egg shaped swing you saw in our black and white bedroom balcony…
.. or a large swing to seat more than one, wicker swings always look great.
And you can get them made in any colour you like.
9 – Wicker Baskets
Baskets are the most common wicker decor accessories you’ll see across homes. From laundry baskets used in bathrooms…
… to toy baskets in nurseries…
… to bedside baskets for storing cushions and throws.
They are useful for organising books, papers and crafting material in you study…

… and kitchen essentials in your pantry.
From large baskets to keep your shoes away…
… to smaller ones for your toiletries, they always look fabulous.

10 – Wicker Wall Shelves
Using wicker shelves is a wonderful way of making functional furniture serve as wall decor.
The variety of shapes, patterns and weaves available means every piece looks like a unique work of art…
… and adds an interesting, quirky touch to the most mundane of spaces.

The smallest of shelves can add a new charm to the space.
… and be functional at the same time.
11 – Mirrors
Wicker woven mirrors make stunning statement pieces.
They are available in so many beautiful shapes and designs.
And can bring the most ordinary space come to life.
12 – Lamps
As with all wicker decor, there are limitless options in wicker lamps too. You’ve seen us use these charming pendants in our boho dining room.
And this simple pendant on the other side of the living room.
Wicker shades work beautifully on floor lamps too.
And also make for stunning lamp stands.
Wicker combines well with simple finishes in a single colour…
… and plays a perfect partner to richer, more patterned looks too.
13 – Wicker Planters
Another wicker decor accessory you’ll find in most home is planters. We used a woven basket as a planter while styling this haveli style living room.
Wicker baskets are available in almost any size, which means from small table top pots to larger floor plants, you’ll find a wicker planter for any of your plants.
Stands available in various sizes for multiple pots make beautiful decor pieces for the interior and outdoors.
Hanging baskets have your ceiling plants covered…
… while wall baskets take care of the wall planters too.
14 – Wicker Tableware
You can find a whole range of tableware in wicker, starting from place mats and napkin rings…
.. to coasters for drinks.
Wicker serving trays have a graceful charm of their own.
Baskets can be used to serve breads and cakes or keep fruits.
Wicker cutlery stands add their own beauty to any tablescape…
… and glassware can be rustic and delicate at the same time.
In fact, the versatility of the material means that it isn’t only about a rough, crude, earthy finish. You can use wicker ware to play its part in the most gentle tablescapes.
15 – Unlimited Wicker Accessories!
Wall baskets in a myriad colours for your living room…
Newspaper stands and magazine racks for your reading nook…
Wall shelves with hooks…
Hurricane lanterns for candles…
String lights to add a sparkle to any space…
Or just a ball of wicker with no deeper meaning or function to it…
There is an unlimited variety of wicker decor products that you can easily get for your home. If you can think it, you can probably get it, and most likely it will be beautiful.
Wicker works in a rustic country set up as well as it does in a chic, modern space. It’s perfect with the neutral colours of Scandinavian decor and just right with a bohemian burst of colours. It makes strong and sturdy beds and sofas and delicately dainty string lights. It’s anything and everything you want it to be in whatever space you like.
I find it’s extreme opposites exciting and it’s adaptability exhilarating. And I can’t wait to use more of it more often in my spaces.
When I do, you’ll be the first to know the where and how right here. In the mean while, let me know how you use wicker decor in your spaces by writing in the comments below. Let’s get wicked with wicker!

Love this post and love all things wicker! Eagerly waiting for your mid century themed project. Mid century and wicker are a match made in heaven. Guess will have to wait for the Covid cloud to clear? 😊
Thanks Minu! That’s true.. they are. But this mid century project doesn’t have any wicker in it! I think you’ll still like it though. 🙂 Very delayed because of Covid.. but we’ll hopefully get there soon now!
You have covered absolutely all possible stylings and functional applicability of wicker, helps a lot. Thanks
With us planning to move to a new place next year I am making notes from your blogs:) great compilation Rittika
So happy you’re finding these posts useful Vrinda. It’s the whole point of writing them, and this is what keeps me going!
Everything is so…. beautiful! I love wicker, but have no idea from where to source it in India.
Any suggestions?
Different vendors for different products, Preetha. If you go to my round-up posts you’ll find where we sourced the furniture and light fittings we’ve used..
