Today we have 11 unusual headboard ideas to give you a ‘wow’ bedroom. A few weeks back we wrote a post on essentials you need for a stylish bedroom. The first thing I listed there was statement headboards. The bed is most definitely the star of your bedroom. And a bed is pretty much defined by its headboard. A statement headboard therefore, goes a long way in making a stylish bedroom.
And how do you go about getting this headboard? What if you can’t find a unique, unusual headboard that will define your room? Then you’ve reached the right place.
Unusual Headboard Ideas:
We have a whole list of unusual headboard ideas that you can choose from. As with most of our posts on this blog, these are easy ideas for anyone to implement. So choose your fave and give yourself a dream bedroom.
(1) Use Cushions:
This is the simplest way possible to give yourself a comfortable headboard. Get pretty covers with loops stitched for your regular cushions or pillows and hang them from a rod above your bed.
Hang the cushion from a slim wall shelf and you get the added benefit of the shelf on top.
This DIY by my fave decor blogger, Emily Henderson is very easy and totally cool. She’s used a couple of leather straps and knobs on the wall to suspend a long body pillow that works as a headboard.
You can use any colour or pattern for the covers and change them as often as you like. This gives you great flexibility to change the look of your room.
(2) Use Rugs:
If you want to make a stronger visual statement, rugs are a great idea. You’ll need a rod similar to the one above, only here you drape a rug over it.
You can hang a larger rug from higher up to make a complete statement wall.
Or you could use a slim runner, just about the size of a headboard.
(3) Use Fabric:
If you want to go even lighter, use fabrics. You can get your wall drape custom made by selecting your fabric. Here 2 rods have been used to make this beautiful canopy.
Or you could use a ready piece of furnishing like a bedcover to work as a headboard or bed canopy for you.
Or you could go really light with sheer fabric and use fairy lights to make your bedroom dreamy.
(4) Use a Carved Panel:
Our unusual headboard ideas are not all soft furnishings. You could also use wood if you’re looking for a traditional, solid headboard. Look for a carved wood panel that you like and fix it directly on to the wall behind the bed.
You could choose a smaller, simpler panel if you like.
And even paint it white, or any colour of your choice.
(5) Use Slats of Wood:
If not carved wood, you could fix regular slats of wood side by side to make yourself an unusual headboard.
These can also be laid out horizontally.
You can try a different look by using wood of different shape, colour, grain and cut.
(6) Upcycle Old Doors & Windows:
If you like vintage you’ll love the idea of upcycling old doors to give your bed a unique backdrop.
You can do the same with old window shutters too.
I love how the lights twinkle through the slats here to give the room a dreamy aura.
(7) Use Bookshelves:
If we’re considering using doors and windows for headboards, we could consider furniture like bookshelves too. A bookshelf used as a headboard also doubles up as your night stand. It stores your books, trinkets, glass of water and the little bit of decor just like a bedside table would.

A larger book shelf helps to use your full bed wall for storage and is a great idea especially for small apartments.
(8) Use Decorative Screens:
We’ve all seen screens like these used as room dividers. What a super idea to place them behind your bed to make a stunning headboard.
You could even use metal screens.
Or painted ones to give a whole different look to your bedroom.
(9) Use Macrame:
A macrame wall-hanging makes a very pretty back drop for a bed. Especially when done like this, using white macrame against a dark wall.
Or you could get macrame woven onto a wooden frame to make an unusual and stunning headboard.
(10) Use Wallpaper:
Another really simple and effective idea to give your bed a statement backdrop is to use wallpaper. Use a bold geometric within a panel.
Or a panel of wallpaper on a plain wall. Notice how a thin strip of wood has been fixed to end the wallpaper neatly.
Or you could use a full wall mural to transport yourself into another world.
(11) Craft Your Headboard:
And if nothing else works, craft out your own headboard on the wall behind your bed. Sketch it on to your wall and it looks oh so pretty.
Use washi tape in different colours and patterns to experiment with a new headboard design every month if you like!
Or use a combination of paint, tape and wall decals to create your own magic behind your bed.

These were our 11 unusual headboard ideas. From simple and fun for kids rooms to rich and luxurious for a master suite, there is something for every space here. See what suits your style and you can start giving your bedroom a magical makeover.
