I’ve spent this weekend making mood boards. I’ve planned out a tropical living room, not one, not two, but THREE ways!
Basically, I’ve been missing shopping during this lock down. I mean, I do this for a living. I not only shop for myself and my home, but I actually get paid to shop for other people’s homes too. And I haven’t shopped forever.
Tropical Living Room – 3 Ways
So this weekend, I did. I started with a tropical living room, inspired by our Modern Tropical Living Room. It’s been a favourite with all of you… and with me too. I love looking at pics of its cool, breezy, neutral vibes, especially in this summer heat.
So I thought I’d recreate that mood board. The same neutral tropical vibes, only this time for you can shop it all. That is how I got this, the first look of our tropical living room..
Naturally Neutral
As you can see, this is very similar in look and feel to our Modern Tropical Living Room. Light colours, and lots of natural elements like wood, cane and jute to give it the cool and easy, naturally neutral tropical vibes.
There are so many pretty pieces in here. Many that I could have used in our Modern Tropical Living Room too.
That is done and dusted though, and I am not shopping for that any more. But you can. All these beautiful products that have gone into making this mood board are listed and linked below. So let’s get shopping.
1 – Delicate Orchid II – This beautiful piece of art is available as a print on paper or canvas.
2 – Delicate Orchid III – Available just as the first, and what a pretty pair they make.
3 – Varmer Cushion Cover – In a beautiful jute and white finish, I love the detail of the wooden buttons.
4 – Botanisk Cushion Cover – Love the simple handmade leaf on the beige, which fits in like a song with the natural elements of this mood board.
5 – Banana Tree Cushion Cover – Can it get more tropical than banana trees?
6 – Fern Hill Cushion Cover – The softest hint of blush ever, to fit in charmingly well with the orchids in our artwork.
7 – Lake Grass Bell Pendant – This delightful pendant has my heart and I can’t wait to use it in a project.
8 – Wonderland Inlay Chest Of Drawers – Nope, this isn’t paint. This whimsical illustration of a forest wonderland has been done in bone inlay.
9 – Andaman Teak Wood Day Bed – You know how I love pattern. The attractive pattern on the backrest and arms fits in perfectly with our breezy, tropical vibes.
10 – L.A Armchair – The natural finish of wood, the airiness of the slatted look. Another piece that naturally fits into our tropical living room.
11 – Beige Geometric Carpet – The beige to fit right into our neutrals. The simple pattern to break the boredom. Just the perfect rug for our space.
12 – Langkawi Seagrass Coffee Table – Such a handsome piece, this… no words required.
13 – Gloria Floor Lamp – Absolutely loving this combination of concrete and wicker.
14 – Lattice Cane Lantern – Can you imagine the pretty patterns that will fall all around once you light up this lantern from the inside?
15 – Buana Chevron Handwoven Basket – At 27 inches tall, this basket would make a cool statement in any space.
16 – Chequered Bench – Another beautiful pattern to add some excitement to our monochromatic colour scheme.
17 – Playful Cow Planter – How cute is this fat little cow?!
18 – Concrete Terrazo Planter – Terrazo makes another interesting texture to add to our tropical living room.
19 – Lubban Trolley – A trolley is a very versatile piece of furniture, especially useful in small spaces… and this is one of the prettiest I’ve seen.
20 – Druvflader Planter – Made of water hyacinth which is protected by a plastic tray on the inside, this planter would be beautiful in any home.
.
Now that’s one beautiful mood board, if I may say so myself. I was mighty please with myself after this one… and also in no mood to stop ‘shopping’. So I thought I’d make another mood board for those who don’t want it all one colour.
Breezy Blues
That is how we got our second mood board for our tropical living room. I imagined the sea, along our tropical wonderland and added soft shades of blues and greens to remind me of it. The result was this.
1 – Tropical Inference II -This beautiful piece of art is available as a print on paper or canvas.
2 – Tropical Inference I – The swaying palm in greeny-blues and olive fall right into place in our breezy blues theme.
3 – Ottil Cushion Cover – The pretty pastels on this are just the right colours for this space.
4 – Kristianne – Love how the simple stripes have been broken by buttons of the same fabric.
5 – Antiquity Pendant Lamp – The silver leaf detail on the cement surface is the icing on the cake.
6 – Nova Pendant Lamp – I will never tire of the wicker – cement combination.
7 – Gillhov Cushion Cover – You can’t go wrong with palm leaves in a tropical theme!
8 – Ingalill Cushion Cover – These monochromatic stripes form a great back drop on which to build your colour and pattern.
9 – Tropica Grey Metal & Rope Chair – We have so many lovely pieces in natural wicker, I couldn’t resist this beauty woven in colour.
10 – Vilto Stool – A quiet piece that serves as a table cum a magazine stand, this will be easy to fit in anywhere.
11 – Majuli Twin Seater – Another weave that was different from the usual with colours that are made for our space.
12 – Neymar Rug – The soft, blueish-grey allows the pattern to make its presence felt without taking centre stage.
13 – Kvistbro Storage Table – Yup, you can get the lid off and use the inside for storage. I would most likely put a large leafed green plant in it.
14 – Sparrisknopp Planter – How pretty is that blue?
15 – Nikkeby Chest Of Drawers – The unusual grey-green colour won this piece a spot in this mood board.
16 – Gradvis Planter – While this pop of bright got this planter its spot.
17 – Langkawi Seagrass Bench – This weave and those colours have my heart.
18 – Beach Palm Storage Basket – And what are the chances of finding baskets in just the right blue!
.
Does this mood board have you imagining a beach view with tropical palms swaying in the sea breeze? (I not only want to shop now, I also want to go on vacation.)
I was mighty please with this mood board too. And yet, this whole exercise seemed incomplete. What if I wanted to design a tropical room in my own home… which of these would I choose? My answer was neither. You know how I love colour. A tropical space in my home would have to be much more vibrant.
Vibrant Vibes
Which is what sent me ‘shopping’ one last time for this final mood board.
1 – Tropical Blooms & Foliage II – This beautiful piece of art is available as a print on paper or canvas.
2 – Tropical Blooms & Foliage III – The tropical foliage and flowers in peaches and greens that are muted yet bright is what made me select these pieces of art for our vibrant tropical living room.
3 – Coco Flower Pendant – I have been eyeing this exquisite light for a while now and am still looking for an opportunity to use it.
4 – Papaja Planter – A little pop of green that will fit into any space.
5 – Moroccan Gilded Lamp – Doesn’t the cut work on the stem remind you of a pretty weave?
6 – Monsoon Forest Chest of Drawers – We have deer, peacocks and tropical foliage, all come to life on this beauty. Along with a distressed white finish which helps tone down all the other colours of this space.
7 – Bombay Rattan Sofa – Rattan work on three sides and that deep forest green, all add to the tropical vibes of this piece.
8 – Botanisk Planter – Made of natural banana fibre, combine it with a large leafed plant to transport you straight to a tropical forest.
9 – Multi Braided Stripe Rug – Woven in natural hemp, the bright colours of this rug are reminiscent of bright tropical flowers.
10 – Gamlehult – This stool with storage can serve as the perfect coffee table, with space to keep magazines and remotes inside.
11 – Bungalow Eleven Armchair – A sleek, modern design in a wicker weave gives us the best of both worlds.
12 – Green Foliage Cushion Cover – Bright green leaves to add colour to our room while staying with the tropical theme.
13 – Aina Cushion Cover – A plain green to set off the print we had above. Love the little knotted tassels which prevent it from being boring.
14 – Hope Colourful Bench – Love the unusual colours and patterns on this one.
15 – Kashkash Cushion Cover – Tropical leaves in bright peaches and green to go with our theme.
16 – Klarafina Cushion Cover – A softer blush to tone down our previous cushion cover, with pretty tassels to add to the fun.
.
And that is my favourite of all the tropical living room themes. It’s bright and bold and full of colour and pattern.. just the way I love my spaces.
And though this one is my fave for myself, I love the other two mood boards too and would use them just as happily for any client who would want them.
What about you? Which one is your favourite and why? Which mood board can you see using in your home? I would love to know.
