So happy to bring to you this happy, sunshine master bedroom from the Dee Residence today. Since this is one of the smallest rooms in the home, it is also one of the simplest in terms of layout and furniture. But what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in warmth and style. Take a look for yourself.
The Plan
As you can see from the layout of the room, the furniture pretty much asked to be laid out this way. The wardrobes went on the entrance wall and the bed into the window alcove.
Though we have used minimal furniture, we made sure that the bedroom is cozy, inviting and lacks nothing that this sweet couple would need to be comfortable.
What I liked best about this layout was the sense of openness as you step into the room. Even though it’s a small space, it looks spacious because of the bare expanse between the wardrobe and bed as you step in.
We later added a trunk to the foot of the bed, which adds a little more functionality and a whole load of style to the space. Let me show you.
The Bed Wall
The bed fit neatly into the window alcove. We had the headboard custom made with a cushioned back for comfort, and a drop at the back to allow the drapes to fall behind it.
Since there is a little space in the alcove on either side of the bed, we also had a pair of small side tables fit into the headboard. Finally, a little shelf at the back is very handy to keep essentials, or even some decor.
The Wardrobe Wall
On the opposite side of the bed we have the wardrobes. The same walnut tone that runs across most of the home helps add a rich warmth to this bedroom too.
Long, slim handles accentuate the vertical grains of the wood and give height to the room.
The Mirror Wall
We thought that large mirror on wall was a great addition to this small room. Can you see how it doubles up the space visually?
It also doubles up as the dressing mirror for this room.
The Foot Of The Bed
As you saw in the plan above, we had a lot of empty space at the foot of the bed. We thought that would be a great spot to work on to give this room its own character.
I have always loved the idea of a bench or some seating at the foot of the bed, but I rarely find the space to be able to do that. I knew this was the perfect place to include one. And this trunk was love at first site for all of us.
It’s a great place to stash away extra cushions and blankets. A good spot to keep a pile of ironed clothes while they are being put away into the wardrobe, or a tray of breakfast tea. It is also works well to sit down and buckle up those sandals or tie your shoes.
We layered it with a rug and this room now gave us all kind of warm, cozy vibes.
Sunshine Master Bedroom
The client had requested yellows in their bedroom, so when we saw this trunk we knew it would make the perfect starting point for our colour scheme.
When you think yellow, it’s usually a lighter, brighter shade that comes to mind. The rustic earthiness of this yellow was a pleasant surprise that we all instantly liked.
Our next selection was the curtains. That beautiful, ethnic print actually has the bright pops of yellow that I was talking about earlier. But mixed with the oranges and reds, it gave us the earthy vibes that would fit in so well with that trunk.
And all those earthy oranges and reds seemed to fall right into place in this rug.
All we had to do now, was to continue with these colours on our bedding. The mustard yellow bedspread gave us an ideal base to layer on our cushions. We persisted with ethnic motifs in earthy colours and textures on those too.
A soft comforter in a block print motif completed the look.
I love how it all came together and the vibrant, yet rooted aura that this sunshine master bedroom exudes.
And I love how the sun was streaming in through those windows on shoot day, as if to second that.
Before & Afters
Here are some beautiful before and afters that bring this transformation to life.
The alcove formed by the window.
Into which we fit in the bed neatly and comfortably.
The blank entrance wall…
Where a large mirror now helps to visually increase the volume of the space.. and makes our dressing area.
The large wardrobes..
Which we transformed into a smarter and sleeker unit.
And the bathroom door wall..
The only change here is that the bathroom door was shifted to the right to fit a basin counter in the bathroom behind it. (More of that when we reveal the bathrooms soon.)
We finished the bathroom door to match the finish of this bedroom, and added a couple of wall plates to brighten it up.
