The way I see it, a beautiful living room goes a long way in making friends and family who visit feel special. But a stylish bedroom is what makes ME feel special in my own home. At the end of a long day when I step into my bedroom to retire for the night, a beautiful bedroom and a comfortable bed makes me feel like a pampered princess.

Essentials For A Stylish Bedroom:

Is it really that difficult to get yourself a stylish bedroom? I think not. These are few basics that go into making most bedrooms. If you give a little thought to each of these, you can have a stylish bedroom yourself quite easily. So let’s get started.

(1) A Statement Headboard:

Let’s start with the most important thing in the bedroom.. the bed. A great headboard not only helps to ground the bed, but can make the focal point of the entire bedroom. A gorgeous piece like this one is a winner all the way.

But the headboard doesn’t necessarily have to be very rich or ornate to make a statement in the room. This simple upholstered headboard is definitely the star of this room. Here it was a matter of getting the colour, texture and finish just right.

(2) Striking Bedside Tables:

Once you’ve got your bed in place, next come the side tables. These are smaller pieces of furniture than the bed, but can still be the show stopper in your room. For instance, this gorgeous piece here.

I would use a stunner like this only with a simple bed. If my bed had a headboard like the first one above, then this would be overkill. I’d use a simpler side table with that. And simple can be just as stylish.

Space permitting, I prefer using larger side tables than smaller ones. They frame the bed well. They are easier to style simply because they have so much more space on top to put things on. And the added storage you get is, of course, a bonus!

But even if you have little space, you can use smaller tables just as effectively to make a statement. I love how this little rack gives enough space for bedside essentials along with a few plants and candles to make it interesting. It’s cute, quirky and easily a conversation piece.

(3) Lots of Cushions:

There’s nothing like a whole lot of cushions on your bed to make it look cozy, inviting and oh so stylish. This is also the easiest of all the 7 bedroom accessories suggested in the post. Look at how this really simple room looks stylish because of 3 statement cushions added to the bed.

You can use cushions to add some colour to your room in a subtle way. See how the white, green and maroon cushions add some colour to this essentially grey room. They each have grey undertones, in keeping with the colour scheme.

Or you can use a plethora of colours, textures or patterns to make a bolder statement.

(4) A Bed Runner to Complete The Look:

That’s the one thing you always find on your hotel bed, isn’t it? A runner at the foot of the bed. It’s a great way to add some colour to your bedding.

Even if you’re not looking for colour, the layers of fabrics and cushions always help to make the bed look cozy.

I don’t like to make the runner a whole separate thing on my bed. So what I do is take one of the comforters and fold it and lay it across the foot of my bed. I love the little burst of colour that breaks the huge expanse of white.

(5) Add Rugs:

While furniture gives a room it’s basic functionality, it’s the furnishings that help give it it’s character and style. Do you remember this master bedroom reveal from last year? The photo on the left is from the original post. I didn’t have a rug for the room yet. I added a rug to the room after that, and doesn’t the space look so much more warm and welcoming now?

Even if there is less space, a rug at the foot of the bed or a runner to fill the narrow gap makes a huge difference.

And again, it doesn’t have to be about colour. A good neutral will be just as effective in making a stylish bedroom.

(6) An End-of-Bed Bench:

I know this is not always possible. I myself have no space for it at the foot of my bed. If I do put a bench at the foot of my bed, I’ll have to use it like a bridge to walk over to the other side! But if you do have some space, a bench is great.

I personally love a simple, upholstered bench which is great to keep your morning breakfast tray, and just as comfortable to sit on and wear your shoes.

Another great idea would be some type of a storage trunk. This also helps to keep extras away in smaller bedrooms.

And if nothing else, it can be a small simple wooden bench. It makes a good full stop at the end of the bed and definitely makes a big style statement in your bedroom.

(7) Sheer Curtains:

The Piscean in me is forever fascinated by all things dreamy. And bedrooms, according to me, need to be high on ‘dreamy’. Sheer curtains are such an easy solution to that. Do you remember this neutral bedroom makeover we did recently? Don’t those curtains add a fairy tale look to this bedroom?

I have sheer curtains in my bedroom too. And I love the way even harsh afternoon light gets filtered into this dreamy look through the sheers.

That about wraps up our 7 essentials for a stylish bedroom. It’s difficult to imagine a bedroom having all these elements as anything but stylish.

The only thing that could go wrong is if all the elements clash with each other. What designers like me do to make sure that doesn’t happen, is make a mood board and see how it all fits in together.
