It’s that time of the year again. The time when I get to go over all our beautiful rug selections all over again… and share them with you! Yup, it’s time for the Rug Roundup 2023.
Rug Roundup 2023
Blues, greens, peaches… and a riot of colours. Wool, cotton and jute. Hand woven, hand tufted and hand knotted. I have used such a variety of rugs over the last year, and yet they all have one thing in common. They are all SUPER pretty, and the rooms they adorn would just not be the same without them.
Let’s go through the Rug Roundup 2023 together, and then you can tell me if you agree.
Kasbah
We had decided that we were going to use blush and green in various combinations and shades across all the rooms of Manzil. So we knew for sure that we wanted a blush and green rug for this living room. The only thing remaining was to find the right rug.
This rug was love at first sight. The blush is just right, soft without being cloyingly sweet. The hints of greens in so many shades, ranging from the pastel minty greens to the olives, gave us flexibility to play with our furnishing choices.
The rug sets the tone of the living room subtly and beautifully.

Mythos
In the master bedroom, we had blush all over the walls with the charming, bespoke wallpaper. So we focussed on green for the furnishings.
The jewel toned greens and gold of this rug are a contrast to the gentle shades of the wallpaper.
Along with the emerald cushions, this rug adds a vibrance to the room. The delicate floral pattern is in perfect harmony with the nature themed wallpaper.

Braided Flower Rug
Considering two sweet girls call this room their home, we decided to go sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice over here. So the green went out, and this room is all peaches and cream.
This rug felt right in so many ways. The colours are perfect for the room. The dots that have been put together to make this rug go seamlessly with the painted dots on the geometric wall mural. The flower like shape is soft and girly. And the jute is not only easy to maintain in a kids’ room, but also adds a variation in texture to all the soft fabrics used here.
Finally, the room’s walls are not at right angles to each other. Considering the oddly shaped floor space around the bed and study table, the round rug falls easily into the room, versus having to align a rectangular rug along non-perpendicular walls.

In the guest room, we stuck to the green, but added some blue to it instead of the blush. This was largely because of the hand painted bed that we selected for this room.
Though the flowers on the bed are predominantly blue, we added greens to the room with the rug, and with the entire wardrobe painted in a beautiful sage green.
You can see how the rug and the bed complement each other.

Kilim Dhurrie
The foyer area of the home gets the most wear and tear in terms of dirty footwear entering the home. The client wanted a rug that is easy to fold and put away during rainy weather so it doesn’t get wet shoes on it. Also one that is easy to wash often as and when it gets dirty. Which is why we selected a dhurrie over a regular carpet.
The baby blue of this dhurrie is in sync with the soft blues and beiges of the living room.

Even though we’ve designed this home a room at a time over the last few years, one thing has remained constant in the clients’ brief. They have always stressed on using a light, subtle colour palette. It was the same with this living room.
We mostly used beiges and greys, with a touch of blue in it’s gentlest shades for colour. The rug blends into the mellow colours of this space.

Mythos
This is a super large room divided into the living and dining area. Since there is no physical divider between the two spaces, I thought a bold rug below the seating would visually mark out the living area and clearly separate it from the dining.
With the deep blue bar and the bright blue tiles of the open kitchen, blue was clearly going to be one of the colours on our rug. Since the client wanted a vibrant space, the red played perfect partner to it. We selected our furnishings and artwork to go with the rug and you can see how beautifully it all falls into place.

We then carried the indigo into the master bedroom. There isn’t much open floor space left in the room after the bed and wardrobes are in place, so instead of placing one large rug, we went with two slimmer runners on either side of the bed.
Since this is attached to the stunning terrace of the home, we have a Mediterranean vibe here with blue and white.

Next, on our Rug Roundup 2023, we have a round rug. There is a swing hanging right in the centre of the room (isn’t that a dream come true?). So we used the rug to ground the swing in this room. A round rug would looks so much nicer than a square or rectangular one would in this position.
Lavender is the client’s colour of choice here. We’ve used soft mauves, pinks and lilacs across the room, so bolder shades in the rug make a nice contrast to brighten up the room.

Pink & Orange Suzani
This room belongs to two bright, cheerful girls who wanted a vibrant, happy space for themselves. The rug adds all the colour they need here, allowing us to use lighter prints and colours on the walls and curtains while still making the room look cheerful.
We placed the rug across the length of the room, between the two beds. It helps to bring together the two separate sleeping areas. It also makes a comfy spot for the girls to sit down with their crafting or board games in the middle of the room.

As suggested by the name of this project, all the spaces of this beautiful home are Vivid in their own way. The living room is no different, though it might seem so when you first look at this rug.
We have a deep, grey-green sofa and a lovely bold print on the chairs. With it’s soft colour and light, self design this rug makes a perfect backdrop for the vivid furniture.

Kasbah
The master bedroom is bright and beautiful with a distinctly ethnic vibe to it. Our starting point was this rug with the perfect blush and blue blend – bright and soothing, all at once.
Since this bedroom is longer than wider, we could easily place the rug at the foot of the bed. We picked colours, prints and motifs inspired by the rug for all the accessories in the room, and this is one of my favourite bedrooms ever!

Multicolour Geometric Rug
Finally, we roundup our Rug Roundup 2023 with this playful, geometric rug.
Our starting point for this room was the vivacious wallpaper. I wanted a rug that would allow that wallpaper to shine, yet not be dull and boring. After all, this is a kids room. The rug, like the other elements, should be fun and playful.
This rug fit the bill. Its grey background tones down the colour with the pretty diamonds adding some cheer. Don’t the colours look like they’ve been picked off the wallpaper?
