When I pick a topic to write about, I spend some time debating in my head whether it is really something you guys would want to read about or not. So nothing makes me happier than getting a post request. A reader on Facebook recently asked me to share some room divider ideas and this post is the result of that.

Room Divider Ideas:

Given the sizes of apartments in our big cities, we often need our spaces to be multi-functional. If you can divide your space into different areas for different functions, it helps to feel more organised.

And how can we do that? That’s where room dividers come in. Some might physically separate a room into different areas while others do so only visually. In smaller spaces it helps if the room dividers serve more than one function themselves.

Which means there are many ways in which you can separate various areas of your room. Today we have 11 of them – room divider ideas of different types, styles and functionality. Let’s begin right away.

(1) Screens & Grills:

Cut work screens and wrought iron grills are a tried and tested way to divide a space. You can use so many different materials and an infinite number of designs to suit your style.

You can also use them partially to visually separate an area without really taking up much physical space.

(2) Slatted Wood Fins:

When you want a physical partition without blocking off an area visually, slatted wood fins are a great solution. The gap between the slats allows for light and air to pass through making it a lighter way to partition off an area than a solid wall. Add a few lights to glam it up.

Another advantage is that you can place the fins along straight or curved lines to make a partition of any shape.

(3) Natural Log or Bamboo:

If you prefer the natural look to the manicured, then line up bamboo or tree logs as you would the wooden slats.

(5) Glass Partition:

Then, of course, we have glass partitions. This is one of the tried, tested and commonly used of our room divider ideas. Plain, clear glass will always make an effective physical partition. Give it a distinctive frame and you can use it to add to your design.

Frosted or textured glass gives more privacy. Again, you can create different looks by using different textures.

(6) Mirrors:

A slight variation on using glass, is using mirrors. Best used in small spaces, because unlike all other partitions, it doesn’t half a space, it visually doubles it up!

Again, instead of a single piece, you could use mirrors in different shapes and sizes to make your design more interesting.

(7) Folding Screens:

And then there might be areas you want to divide sometimes and use as a single space at other times. These screens give you more flexibility than any other of our room divider ideas.

Use wood, fabric, wallpaper or rope. Paint it, stencil it or hang your favourite macrame. Every type of screen looks beautiful and can become the decor statement in your given space along with working as a room divider.

(8) Rope:

Now we get to the more unusual of our room divider ideas. Ropes make great visual and physical dividers while allowing the space to still look open and light. How spectacular is this rope divider. You can get a guide to how this was made right here.

(9) Curtains:

Curtains are another soft, light way to divide a room.

These could, of course, be made of fabric. But there are a whole lot of options here too. How about a macrame hanging for instance?

Yes, you read that right. We’re getting to the prettiest of our room divider ideas. Strings of fairy lights to work as a partition.. how pretty is that!
