Hello and welcome to our first reveal of this new decade! Today, we bring to your our quick and easy guest room makeover reveal from our ‘We Want It Brighter Makeover‘.
It’s been a long time since I introduced this room on the blog, so in case you missed it, or have forgotten the details of our plan, click here to read all about it.
The Plan
As you will remember, the entire furniture of this room had been made recently, so the client didn’t want to re-make it.
There you have it.. the bed, side tables, wardrobe and TV unit. All custom made and built in.. and all of it had to stay.
Quick and Easy Guest Room Makeover Reveal
But they did want the room to look much brighter and happier than it did. So how could we change it all without changing anything?
We had only the soft furnishings and accessories with which to makeover this entire room. That does make it quick, but not so easy. It’s always easier to start on a blank slate than work around and adjust to fixed design pieces that you can’t change.
But we weren’t going to complain or give up too easily… so this is what we did.
The TV Wall
The wardrobe and attached TV unit were already built in. Yet, the client agreed that the whole TV unit, especially as you enter the home, looked very heavy. If you look at this photograph carefully you’ll notice a high chest of drawers below the television and cabinet shutters behind the TV too.
They were more than happy to make the TV section lighter without disturbing the wardrobe. So we knocked one drawer off of the cabinet and removed all the storage from behind the TV. A slim wood panel took care of all the exposed wires and our cabinet looked neater and lighter.
Adding a bit of green in the corner helped bring some life into the room. A pretty glass clock adds a floral pattern to the TV wall too.
The Window Wall
Here too, everything, right down to the window pelmet, were built in along with the wardrobe. So the curtain fabric is all we could change to make our big difference to this area. The existing curtains were thick, dull and heavy. If you drew them the room became dark instantly. If you pulled them to one side, you lost out on using the fabric as a decor accessory.
We added layers of fabric to do just that. A floral sheer allows light inside and adds pattern to the plain wall. The curtains are a light colour with a light pattern so as to not be overbearing.
Along with our plant in the corner, this is just perfect to make this side look soft and pretty.
The Bed Wall
And finally, the bed wall. There wasn’t much we could change here either. They had the dressing mirror on one side and the pooja on the other, neither of which could be done away with. So, as with the rest of the room, we focussed on changing the little things.
First we changed the light fitting on the mirror. We did away with the boring wall bracket that you barely noticed, to a bolder, funkier fitting that makes a statement and adds some zing to that space.
Then came the headboard fabric. We swapped the plain brown fabric for a patterned indigo to go with the rest of the room. When in doubt, it’s always patterns to the rescue to help revive any space.
And finally, the captivating abstract artwork to catch the eye and give a focal point to the blank wall.
Finally, pretty new bedding in patterns of various sizes in whites and blues to bring in a homely, lived in look to the space and gave this room it’s final breath of life.
Before & After
Here’s a recap of the befores and afters from our quick and easy guest room makeover reveal.
The heavy, built in TV wall…
Which we made lighter by reducing the storage and pushing the wires behind the panel.
The window wall, which we brightened using soft furnishing..
… in light colours, patterns and layers.
And the dull, lifeless bed wall…
which we gave life to by accessorizing with fabrics, light fittings and artwork.
