It has been such a long time since I first introduced this project here on the blog. Due to various reasons, of which the lockdown is the biggest, this reveal has been a while coming. But, as they say, better late than never. I am thrilled to introduce the very first space from our Mid Century Modern Home on the blog today. Welcome to the Mid Century Modern Living Room reveal.
The Plan:
I had explained the plan in great detail in the introductory post to this living room here. I know it’s been a really long time since then, so do hop over to that post for a refresher. I’ll do a quick recap here to begin with.
We enter the home through a wide and long passage, which we’ve used cleverly for shoe storage, crockery cabinets and a well concealed bar.
Just round the corner from our bar we step into the dining area.
We walk right past it into a warm, cozy living room, which further leads into a green balcony with a breathtaking view.
I can’t wait to show you these areas on the blog today.
Entrance Passage
Let us begin our mid century modern living room reveal right at the entrance. Since the passage was very wide, we decided to use it well. We did this by building an floor to ceiling unit along the entire left wall.
The unit right next to the entrance door houses a large number of drawers for shoes, a panel for all the switches and the video door phone and storage for crockery above that.
Next comes the entrance door to the kitchen, which when shut lies flush with the rest of this unit.
Finally, towards the dining side this unit holds the entire bar. Since we didn’t have the depth to slide the wine cooler in from the front, we slid it in sideways. As you can see above, the wine cooler opens near the dining table.
The remaining bar is hidden well inside this unit. Once you open those shutters at the bottom, you can access a larger drawer to hold the liquor bottles and smaller ones for all the little bar paraphernalia.
I like to think of the top half as Alibaba’s magic cave. Just say ‘open sesame’ to reveal all it’s treasures!
The shutters fold and disappear into the sides and what you’re left with is this sparkling bar unit in mirror and glass. A pull out tray just below helps to increase counter space when mixing drinks.
Fold the doors shut and it all magically disappears again, leaving behind a simple passage with a storage unit.
The Entrance Console
As you first step into the living room, you are greeted by this delicate console.
You do need some place to park keys and take a look at yourself as you enter and leave the home, and this console takes care of that.
I love how that large mirror adds depth to the space and reflects all the beautiful elements of this dining room, multiplying them.
The Dining Area
We have this beautiful mid century sideboard balancing the console on the other side of the dining table.
Our dining table fits in neatly between these two beautiful pieces of furniture.
Since we didn’t want the dining chairs blocking the entry into that passageway, we used a bench against the wall instead of dining chairs on the far end.
These charming vintage chairs belonged to the client and fit in beautifully into this mid century modern living room.
We completed the look with that striking piece of art and those stunning dining lights.
We went back and forth on that artwork for a while. The client thought it would look great on that wall. I was worried it was just too black in an otherwise soft living room that was all blushes, greys and creams.
Till we finally got the artwork on site and thought we’d just ‘hold it there’ to see what it looks like. I’ve never been happier to have been proved wrong. It looked absolutely stunning on that beautiful grey wall, and it took us a second to decide that it would stay right there.
There was no argument at all over the dining lights… we all thought they looked great! We have them on dimmers to be able to control their intensity and can create all sorts of moods with the light.
The Living Area
Sitting at the dining bench you get a direct view of the living area.
We have a cozy circle of seats going around that large coffee table.
The main sofa is flanked by the dazzling lamps. The exquisite roses play the show stopper here and helped us pick our colour scheme for this space.
On the opposite side, the TV unit houses the sound system and all electronic gizmos.
Mid Century Modern Living Room Reveal
We used simple, clean lines with all of the furniture.
And started building our colour scheme with the blushes and greys that we picked from that beautiful painting.
We’ve used soft blushes and creams right across, with a sprinkle of gentle patterns here and there.
The placid grey waves of this rug hold them all together.
The Balcony
And then, just beyond the delicate sheers of the living room is this little green oasis.
On one side we have a comfortable sofa surrounded by greens. The real ones make a green wall above, while this brilliant, tropical tile mosaic brings the greens to life on one side.
These smart, outdoor accent chairs nicely round up the balcony seating.
Before and Afters
Let’s wrap up this mid century modern living room reveal with a few before and afters.
The entrance passage to the home…
… is now a beautiful view with the bar and crockery unit on side and the tall plant visually separating the living and dining areas.
The dining area..
… with the artwork and sideboard making a stunning backdrop to our beautiful dining space.
The living space…
… made cozy and comfortable with simple furniture and furnishings in soft colours and patterns.
And this balcony, which didn’t need much at all with that scintillating view.
So we made sure it is a beautiful, comfortable space to enjoy that view from, and put in the only one thing that it was missing.. the greens.
That bring us to the end of our mid century modern living room reveal.
There are a few spaces I still need to cover to complete this entire area.
The long passage leading into the bedrooms, which we have used as an art walk, a small study to the left, just as you enter that passage. As also the main entrance to this home.
Since this post was becoming too long, I have saved these spaces for the next post. Remember to sign up here so that you don’t miss it. And click here for all the spaces from the Mid Century Modern Home.
But while we wait for those, remember to first let me know what you think about this living room.
This home is very different from any other I have designed so far and that’s what I’ve loved most about it. The most exciting part of design for me is working with different styles, colours and aesthetics and ending up with a space that looks like no other you’ve designed. So I’d love to hear what you think about it.
Until next time,
.

I simply love the understated elegance that this living room exudes. It’s hard to see this kind of design from the usual “home interior designers” if you know what I mean. Love your style and sensibility and I keep coming back to your blog for inspiration for my own home. Would you know where one could get similar looking armchairs ( the blush pink ones)? Thanks!
Thanks so much Aarti. 🙂
We had the blush pink chairs custom made… they aren’t off the shelf..
Waited for this reveal for the longest time! Love the artwork, lights & the mirror. That shot is just so beautiful. The balcony is gorgeous!
Would you mind sharing the source the artwork?
Thanks Minu. The artwork had been picked up by the client during their travels..
Lovingly designed home , Rittika.
Possible to have a link to the hardware used for the bar sliding doors?

Thanks Rashi! I’m loving the pastels here too..
Hi Rittika, beautiful home very classy but we miss the source of the furniture and rest.. it starts with your feet … Where is that signature style
Haha! So happy to hear this Preetha.. I thought I was the only one missing the ‘Get The Look’ section. 🙂 In this home most of the furniture is custom made, so there are no links to link it to! Which is why most of the rooms (except one bedroom) don’t have the section. You’ll see it back again in future projects, whenever I have products I can link to.
