Next, let’s move on to the master bedroom of Bhargavi. If smart space utilitsation is your thing, you’re definitely going to love this one!
Master Bedroom of Bhargavi
On paper, when I saw a 16′ x 10′ master bedroom, my first reaction was, “Not bad! We have a decent size to work with here.”
Until I walked on to site and started picturing the layout in my head. “The large window in front of a bed is going to throw things off a bit. Where do we fit in the television? There’s another window on the adjacent wall – that’s half that wall gone too!”
And suddenly, I was scampering for space. We want to fit in a king sized bed, two side tables, 2 wardrobes, a study table, a dressing area, bookshelves for our book-loving clients and a television… on two and a half walls and a nook!
But guess what? We did! Let me show you the plan…
The Plan
A small passage as you enter the bedroom makes the dressing area. The bed and side tables go on the longest wall in the bedroom, with the wardrobes on the second longest. The television goes in front of the bed, though a little to the side.
The study table fits in front of the window. We added an L shaped ledge to it that runs under the television and makes the ‘TV unit’.
The entire empty wall near the study table is fit with bookshelves from floor to ceiling. It’s a book lover’s paradise, and our clients love it!
The Dressing Area
The bedroom door opens into a small passageway before you enter the actual bedroom. This passage is great in terms of privacy, and also gives us an additional nook which we immediately planned to make the dressing area.
Not only did we put this tiny nook to good use, but since it is just outside the bathroom door, the placement is perfect.
The floor-to-ceiling mirror goes on the wall behind the bedroom door.
We put in a slim 6 inch full length unit on the wall between the bathroom door and the mirror. It’s painted to match the wall, so you can’t really tell it’s there. The shelves inside give ample space to fit in cosmetics.
The Bed Wall
A bed and two side tables, placed in the centre of this wall are the focal point of the master bedroom of Bhargavi. As with the rest of the home, we used simple, straight lines for all of the furniture pieces.
It’s the fabrics and artwork that bring in all the colour.
The Bookshelves
The bookshelves start right alongside the bed. Finished completely in a gorgeous veneer, they give a warm vibe to the room. We also lit them up beautifully to add a rich, golden glow to the master bedroom.
Covering almost the entire wall, they go right up to the study table. The clients are booklovers and with these shelves, they have more than enough space to fit in their book collection.
The Study Table
The window was the best place to fit in the study table. Not only in terms of space, but also in terms of light.
Yet, it is this very light that we didn’t want to block. So we made sure to leave as much of the window unobstructed as possible.
Which means, we have covered a strip of window in the middle. This strip is enough to hold the table with its single drawer, and also a narrow strip above the table top to hold the switches and plug points for the table. This also gives a lip to the far end of the table so that nothing rolls down into the window space.
Above, below and behind this blocked strip, we left the window open. This means the blinds, when pulled down, slide behind the table, all the way to the floor.
TV Wall
The study table turns around the corner and continues as the TV unit.
We added a narrow ledge, extending from the study table and running under the television. This grounds the television so it isn’t floating in the middle of the wall. It also protects it from, say, the chair hitting it by mistake. And it gives additional space to keep the remote control, a sound bar if required, and even extra space for the study table.
The TV unit ends at the curtains. That large window has beautiful light flowing into the room.
The Wardrobes
Which brings us back, in a full circle, to the entrance wall of the bedroom. We have an exquisite fluted veneer on the entire wardrobe. That’s another detail of the room that is both elementary in design and luxurious in finish.
Look and Feel
As I have described above more than once, the design elements of the room are all very simple in shape and form, with rich luxurious finishes. You would have noticed the same in the living room of Bhargavi too. We then added the warmth, texture and pattern using fabrics and furnishings.
To start with, the clients picked this rug. We took the peaches, creams and beige of the rug and sprinkled them across the room.
The deep brown wood tones on all the furniture, especially the wardrobes and the bookshelves, give a luxuriance to the room.
Just like the rug, the beige, textured bedcover makes a base for our peachy cushions and quilt. The bright pink lotuses on the artwork add a pop of brightness to the room.
The gold glass of the pendants, the artwork frame and bedside table drawer knobs add a lavishness to the rich wood tones of the veneer.
Before and Afters
Here are some pictures to show you what we started with and how we transformed the space.
The long bed wall..
We placed the bed right in the centre with bedside tables on either side, and then dressed up this view with artwork and pendants.
The corner between the window and bed wall…
Bookshelves start at the floor and go all the way up to the beam, giving our clients all the space they need for their books.
The little corner between the two windows..
We put a corner unit here, with the study table blocking as little of the window as possible, and the television placed on the large wall.
