We walked through the master bedroom of Daastan a couple of weeks back. Remember I said then, that this is the only bedroom in this home with its own walk-in closet area? The master bathroom is also the only one that we redesigned in this home. So let’s take a look at the Master Bathroom and Walk-In of Daastan today.
Master Bathroom and Walk-In of Daastan
As you walk to the master bathroom from the bedroom, you have to walk through a small room that serves as the walk-in closet. Though it isn’t very large, I still love the fact that it’s there, because talking the wardrobes out of a room automatically makes it look so much more spacious.
So we made the most of what we had. Let me show you how.
The Plan
The walk-in closet is a long narrow space. Instead of using only one wall to place the closets, we placed them in an ‘L’ along a length and a width, to increase the wardrobe space.
The master bathroom is beyond the walk-in closet. We couldn’t do much with the layout because it is too small to be able to change things around. There is a small basin counter as you enter the master bathroom, followed by the WC, and the shower area at the far end.
But we changed the treatment of these entirely to quite literally make magic!
Walk-In Closet
You saw the photo gallery wall on the entrance passage wall of the master bedroom last week. Just opposite the photo gallery, we have the entrance to the walk-in closet.
We placed the wardrobes in an ‘L’ to maximise use of the small closet space. The two left-most shutters make one wardrobe and open like any regular wardrobe shutter. The four shutters that make the right corner are a pair of sliding folding shutters each. The two facing shutters slide to open in a ‘V’ on the left, while the two on the right fold downwards. The entire right side ‘L’ of the wardrobe is open when these four shutters are open. (Take a look at the plan above for a clearer idea)
Since it’s a small space, we used mirrors on all the shutters to make it look bigger. The mirrors are also perfect to have this space double up as a dressing area.
Remember how I said in the last post that the gallery wall reflects into the mirrors of the closet area, so you can see it whether you are looking into or out from the walk-in closet? This picture shows that beautifully, doesn’t it?
Master Bathroom of Daastan
The door to the left of the walk-in leads into the beautiful master bathroom. The wood finish tiles and laminates used here blend seamlessly with the wood finishes used in the master bedroom.
As I had said earlier, given its size and the placement of the entry door, we couldn’t really change the layout. So the basin counter is right at the doorway. Next we have the WC, with the shower area at the far end.
We needed the ledge wall behind the WC to fit in the flush tank, so we decided to make the most of it. Even though the basin counter is small, it looks bigger because it continues seamlessly into the ledge wall. We used the flooring tile on the counter and ledge wall top so that it looks like a wooden counter top.
The same ledge wall continues further into the shower area. Here too, the ledge is a great place to keep bathing essentials while taking a shower. But we not only used the top of the ledge, we also made niches below the top. These make great storage spots to keep the bathroom looking neat and clean. Once you are done with your shower, you can put everything back in the niche and out of eye’s view for the day.
Look & Feel
The clients loved this terrazzo tile, so that’s where we started our material selection for this bathroom. The chips on this terrazzo are shades of brown, grey and black, and we used those across the bathroom for everything else we picked.
We picked a rich brown wood finish tile for the flooring and counter to highlight the browns of the terrazzo. All the bath fittings are a gun-metal grey, inspired by the grey chips on the tile.
Finally, black accents like the mirror frame, pendant light and towel holder complete the look.
Before & Afters
Here is a look at the walk-in closet before…
We swapped the standalone wardrobes for these beautiful, mirror paneled built-ins that maximise storage and also expand the visual space of this little room.
And a view of the master bathroom before…
Though we didn’t change the layout of this bathroom, we did organise it better to give extra storage wherever possible. We also completely transformed the vibe of the space.
We are so proud of our work in the walk-in closet and master bathroom of Daastan. Working in a small area comes with its set of restrictions. When we can work within those to transform the space into one that works and looks better in every way, then we pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.
So, what do you think? Do we get a pat on the back from you too? Let me know in the comments below.
