I know it’s going to be difficult to step out of that dazzling foyer, but take a minute to look this way. Oh yes.. a quick look through that door to your left. Did you catch a glimpse? Now that I have your attention, welcome to the living and dining room of Keje!

The Plan

The living area is a large space which the client wanted to leave as open as possible. They have a toddler in the home and it was important to them to give him place to walk and run around freely. They were fine with pulling their dining chairs into the living area once in a while, when they needed more seating. But on a daily basis, the baby would have more free space with less furniture around.

The doorway to the left is the entrance into the living room from the foyer. The TV goes along the entry wall, with the sofa opposite it. As you can see from the photos, we used a sectional and a comfortable arm chair instead of two 3-seater sofas.

We have the dining area in the extended ‘L’ of the space. Since the space is almost a square, we went in for a round table, which fits snugly into it. A sideboard in the niche helps make space for all the dining ware. The door to the left of the dining table leads into the kitchen, while the opening on the right is the passageway into the bedrooms.

The Living Room

The small foyer has an opening to it’s left from which you step directly into the living area. We arched the opening to go with all the arches in this home.

We framed these stunning photographs to accentuate the length of this wall. Notice how the colours of the flowers bring out the purples of the marble on the TV wall? (Look at the pic above) We also used these photographs to bring out the colour tones of the marble as subtly as possible.

The TV has been placed on the large wall next to the entrance. We used this exquisite book-match marble to panel this wall. Considering the large TV that’s come here, we were a little worried that most of the book-match would go under it and get lost behind the TV. But we arranged it in such a way, that only the bottom of that ‘V’ gets hidden. The glorious ‘wings’ fly right out from behind the TV.

Opposite the television we have our seating area.

The large sectional and wing chair easily fit in there, with the rug grounding them well.

We had the generous coffee table custom made on site. I love how the sections make it look smaller and lighter than a single piece of that size would have looked. Each of the sections also slides open to reveal storage within it. This helps make additional space to put away the remotes, books etc, in this sparsely furnished living room.

The Dining Room

To the left, the living room opens out in an ‘L’ into the dining area. The passage leading into the bedrooms separates the living from the dining quite obviously. The gentle arch on this once again ties in with the rest of the home.

The round dining table fits in beautifully into the space. The bespoke chandelier emphasises the contour of the table. And I love how all of this sits between the arches on either side.

The right archway opens into the passage leading into the bedrooms.

…and the left on the niche which snugly houses the sideboard.

The dining room dazzles when the chandelier is lit up in the evenings.

We picked heavier chairs with arms for the dining, so that they easily double up as comfortable arm chairs if pulled into the living area for additional seating.

This large, gold mirror further ups the glam quotient here. It reflects that gorgeous niche, adds depth and multiplies the dazzling elements, like the chandelier and beautiful greens, twice over.

The Living and Dining Room of Keje

As always, we built our colour scheme for this room by first selecting the rug. Now usually, rug selection starts off on a clean slate. We pick any rug at all.. anything that we like.. and start from there.

In this case, we took the floor marble into consideration. It’s a beautiful grey, in a slightly darker tone than usual because we could go darker in this large home with high ceilings. We had to make sure that the rug enhanced this lovely grey.

We also kept in mind the purple tones of the book match marble on the TV wall.

This graceful rug was a hit on all accounts. The greyish base go beautifully with the marble and the gentle pinks and blues are just the colours we were looking for.

The solid, dusty rose sofa brings life to all the grey around it. Delicately embroidered pink flowers on the curtains further bring in the pinks.

We mixed up the blues with the pinks in the cushions. And that stunning piece of art is the icing on the cake. With the blues, pinks and gold, I stopped in my tracks when I saw this one. It’s like it was painted just for this space.

Before and Afters

I’m going to end the tour of the living and dining room of Keje with some stunning before and afters.

The sofa wall is the first view of this living room as you enter it.

With its rich finishes and gentle colours, the living room looks luxurious, inviting and full of warmth.

The TV wall on the opposite side.

We paneled it with a beautiful book-match marble framed in wood to enhance it’s grandeur.

Living and Dining - Keje

The dining area with its niche.

Which we arched to go with the rest of the home. An inbuilt sideboard and shelves add to its beauty and functionality.

The passageway leading into the bedrooms…

We arched the opening, as also its ceiling. Shifting the door of the master bedroom to the centre of the facing wall has made such a big-small difference!

The difference between an understanding and a compromise, according to me, is this. The first is a hearty agreement that brings out the best of two points of view while the latter has you give up on something and settle for less.

When I first walked into the living and dining room of Keje, it was an absolute bare shell. A truly blank canvas on which we could paint what we liked. We worked hand in hand with the client on this one, every step of the way. Both of us started out on almost opposite ends of the spectrum, for what we had in mind for this space. Through a series of discussions we reached a middle path. An understanding that resulted in this glorious space.

You’ve seen the pics.. what do you think? Write in with your questions and comments, and don’t forget to tell me how amazing all of this looks! 🙂
