After a while today, we address another request from a reader. A few weeks back a reader asked me for ideas on how to style a TV unit. And so today, we are here with tips and tricks on just that. Let’s get straight to it.
How To Style A TV Unit
Almost everyone I know loves watching television. Yet everyone, without exception, hates the TV itself. It is a big, black, ugly contraption that has absolutely no saving grace when it is off.
And yet we must all have it.
And since we must have it, we must try to make it look as minimally ugly as possible. Which seems like a scary task. How do you get your TV to look pretty?
My answer to that is, you don’t. It can’t.
So here’s what I suggest. Try to make everything around it pretty so that you look as little as possible at the unsightly beast (which is difficult, considering it is a big, black, ugly contraption) and as much as possible at the beauty around it.
Though this sounds like an impossible task, it isn’t. Let’s take it one step at a time.
Start Simple
Do you remember our simple TV unit from our Garden Style Vintage Bedroom? It had a simple shelf, which we lined up with books, and a simple box for the remotes. A clock and a small plant took care of the rest.
Yet another TV unit that we styled very simply was from our Pretty Pastel Bedroom. A burst of greens next to the unit was our eye candy, and we only used a candle and some small memorabilia on the unit itself.
The trick, when you are going really simple, is to keep it clean. An almost blank slate, completely clutter free, with just a couple of decor pieces to add some interest, makes for a simple refreshing vignette. You can never go wrong with this.
Books & Candles
Now you can start layering. A couple of books laid flat down help to make a base for little decor items you put on top of them, just like a tray would.
How you arrange them would depend on how your TV is configured with respect to your TV unit. Mine, here, is much higher than the unit. So I used a taller plant and a higher stack of books below it to help fill in the gap.
This TV is placed directly on the unit, and so the tall candles and planters went on either side of the television. I love how the artwork resting on the wall serves as another layer behind the candles, and great eye candy to distract you from the TV.
A lowish television here means that here too, the stack of books is low below the TV. The tall vases on one side balanced by the even taller dry flower arrangement on the other help to give levels to the decor across the long TV unit.
Fresh Flowers Are Always Pretty
You can never go wrong with fresh flowers. This beautiful big bunch to one side of the television once again helps to vary the heights of the different clusters across the unit.
While a smaller bunch here in the pretty vase makes a quiet statement of its own. I love how the tall plant here adds height to the entire arrangement. Even though it isn’t on the TV unit itself, it is very much a part of the TV unit decor.
The other piece I love in the pic above is the…
Lamp
Whether a single piece as above, or used as a pair below, lamps can and add oodles of style to your TV unit.
Remember how we used this unusual lamp on our TV unit from the Modern Tropical Living Room to add a bit of quirky fun.
Plants For The Win
And when all else fails, as usual, plants come in to the rescue. You’ve seen them, probably without noticing them, on almost all the styled TV units above. And so a post on how to style your TV unit remains pretty much incomplete without mentioning them.
Place them on your unit, little or big depending on how much space you have. Hang them from the ceiling as we did in our Neutral Bedroom below.
Or place them in every possible direction and then you just won’t need anything else to style your TV unit.
Gallery Walls
This doesn’t strictly answer the question, ‘How To Style Your TV Unit’, because this involves styling the wall behind it rather than the unit itself. I yet felt this post would be incomplete without mentioning gallery walls.
A gallery wall behind a TV unit is a great way to avoid requiring much styling on the unit itself.
Notice how all these TV units have not been styled at all, because with these beautiful walls behind them, who is looking at the unit?
Whether you decide to make your gallery on a regular white wall..
… or make a backdrop of the colour or texture of your choice, gallery walls are a great way of how NOT to even need to style your TV unit!
That about wraps up our post on how to style a TV unit (including how NOT to style it!). It is less intimidating if you imagine the TV unit as a console or sideboard, and the TV on the wall as a piece of art above it. Now begin to style it as you would such a console.
These are really simple and basic tips on styling a TV unit. You can gradually build on these and try all sorts of different things.
Let me know if you found these useful. And if you have a secret trick up your sleeve, remember to share it with me in the comments below.
