Another day, another project wrapped up, and I’m feeling lit! So happy to share with you today, the home office cum family room of ‘Noor’.

Home Office Cum Family Room

Noor means divine light. I remember walking into this place the first time and wondering why the ceiling was low, why the light was dull and why the space felt so ‘heavy’. The light, airy, buoyant feeling I get every time I walk into this home now, inspired me to call it Noor.

Home Office Cum Family Room

Noor is a two bedroom flat which is an annex to the client’s home. We designed the living room of the flat to make this home office cum family room. The two bedrooms have been designed as a guest room and a home gym.

I can’t wait to share all of these spaces with you, and here’s the first today – the home office cum family room.

The Plan

This space would ordinarily have been the living cum dining room of this flat.

Home Office Cum Family Room

We used one half of this living and dining area as the family lounge. The other half makes a large, comfortable home office.

Let me show you more of both.

The Home Office

The home office was placed towards the window so that it gets ample natural light during the day.

The clients weren’t looking for too much storage. With work-from-home becoming a norm, all they needed was a quiet, open place, where they could sit comfortably and undisturbed to work.

We designed a simple study unit with basic storage – just a slim drawer in the centre with a cabinet on each side so they can neatly put away everything at the end of the day.

Opposite the study table, we have a cushy day bed and a large coffee table.

Home Office Cum Family Room

It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs after a long call. (Or to take a power nap while you ‘attend’ a boring one.)

It even makes a good place for meetings that are not virtual!

The Family Room

The other half of this space has been designed as a family room. There is a TV unit with comfortable seating, but in a far more casual style than we would have designed for a formal living room.

The relaxed sectional, layered with cushions, makes a snug spot for movie night with the family.

This is also the client’s music room, where he can listen to his favourite music, at his desired volume, without disturbing the rest of the family.

The Colours

When I first walked into this home, I had decided this space needs to feel lighter and airier. We raised the ceiling, knocked off the extra cove, (scroll down to the before and afters to see what I mean) and decided to use light neutrals to help this space breathe.

The original veneer was an extremely dark colour, which we decided to change to a lighter one in keeping with our overall goal. This beautiful grey oak was love at first site.

It’s an unusually light colour. We knew it would look beautiful as is, and also knew that the furniture pieces we ordered would never be the same shade. Given it’s greyish-brown tone, we decided that dark walnut tones would complement this veneer magnificently.

Though we used two rugs in the two different spaces, I didn’t want to demarcate the two areas as visually separate. The idea was for the full space to look like one cohesive unit, making it appear large and seamless.

We selected these two rugs which balance each other beautifully. A gentle geometric pattern for the larger rug below the sectional with a smaller, transitional rug on the study side.

Though the patterns are an interesting contrast, the similar colour tones help tie them in.

Next came this exquisite wallpaper. Just as with the rugs, this is another distinct pattern, yet in the same colour tones as the rugs… and the rest of the living room. It adds so much character to this large, sparse study unit.

The Furniture

Though a table or two in the dark walnut helps add warmth to the room, the main idea was still to keep the room as light as possible. And so we went with whites on the furniture wherever possible.

The custom made, distressed white TV unit certainly helps to lighten up the entryway of this family room, as does the beautiful bone inlay on the end tables.

Just as the distressed white finish on the graceful carving makes this large table so easy on the eye.

And finally, the artwork and decor we selected was once again ‘light’. Not just in terms of colour, as in these beautiful, woven baskets or the white ceramic birds you see above. But also symbolically, with nature and birds being the predominant theme.

Home Office Cum Family Room

It’s Lit!

And then of course, we literally lit it up!

Though the room has large sliding windows on one end, the L-shape means the light isn’t that bright in the far corner.

Home Office Cum Family Room

We made sure to light it up so it’s well lit both in the day and night.

We have pretty spot lights on the study table so that working late is no trouble at all.

And these lovely spots on the birds make this my favourite view. Don’t the shadows from the two separate spots make it look like the birds are in flight?

Before and Afters

The entrance wall…

The TV unit houses all their audio and video requirements. Further on, the daybed completes the study area.

The sofa corner…

… where a large sectional makes the perfect spot to hang out for a movie or game night with family or with a book or music by yourself.

A view of the study wall…

We raised the ceiling and took the study unit all the way up to give the room more height, to make a comfortable, beautiful home office.

The opposite end of the home office…

… comfortably fits in a day bed and coffee table.
