I am so, SO excited to bring to you the haveli style living room reveal from our Modern Vintage Home today. We had completed this living room just before the lockdown and were finally able to get photographs of it last week. And so, here it is!
Haveli Style Living Room Reveal
Let’s start with a quick refresh of our plan. You can click here for the introductory post which has more details.
The space has been divided into three areas. The main living area, which consists of the main seating and television viewing area.
A wooden platform and open shelves demarcate the window side, which the client wanted to double up as the sleeping area for their son. We designed it in a way that in a larger gathering it serves as an extension of the living area and guests can spill over to this side quite comfortably.
The dining area sits separately to one side.
The Living Area
You’re used to seeing a photo like this with my feet on the selected rug, right? This time our starting point for the design was not a rug. In fact, it’s the first time I’ve completed a living room without putting a rug in it at all, and we have this gorgeous floor to thank for it.
As you enter the home, this beautiful floor is what catches your eye first, and we used it to inspire the colours and style for this living room.
Originally they had seating along the entrance passage and the television where we now have the sofa. Seating always takes more space than a TV console, and so the entrance looked cramped and messy.
We swapped the two to give a more open feel to the living room.
We picked up the blue and gold from the flooring and made those our living room colours. Blue and gold cushions offset the solid blue sofa. And we used a rustic blue and gold print to go on our wooden carved two-seater.
The furniture we picked up is a mix of two styles. Rustic, earthy furniture, like the centre table and the wooden carved sofa, to go with the patterned floor and old style solid wood doors. And simple, straight lined pieces like the sofa, to add the modern to our ‘modern vintage home’.
The artwork fell into place, both in terms of colours and style.
The Window Side
The wooden platform, and the beautiful open shelves, separate the living room from the window side.
We added this winged chair to the otherwise empty corner to make a statement… and how!
The quirky upholstery fits in so well with this haveli style living room and makes this chair my favourite piece of furniture in this room by far.
As you step on to the platform, this stunning mural wallpaper by Krsnaa Mehta transports you into another world.
With the window on one side and this mural on the other, you truly get a sense of being in the outdoors.
We shifted the sofa-cum-bed to the inside, behind the partition. This keeps the bulky sofa from blocking the entrance. It also gives more privacy to our young man when he sleeps here at night.
We added a mattress and cushions to the window ledge to make that a comfortable seating area too.
The Dining Area
We continued our blue and gold vintage look into the dining area too. As in the living area, we selected this rich turquoise silk fabric with gold motifs for our blinds.
The large brass mirror and the lantern style amber glass lamp are in keeping with the traditional look.
Finally, the delicate brass Moroccan pendants add to the old world charm.
This beautiful dining area truly completes our haveli style living room reveal.
Before And After
Though we haven’t changed the basic structure of this space, these before and afters will show you just what an amazing transformation we have achieved.
The main living area…
We changed the layout by putting the heavy pieces of furniture against the walls and the lighter ones in the open and passage areas.
The large TV unit, and the two huge sofas were making the space look crowded, congested and dull.
The heavy sofa went in place of the television. The TV went in the passage way instead of the chairs that were blocking it. And the chairs went into the window area.
In the window area, the sofa-cum-bed was moved over to the opposite side…
… and lighter chairs placed here so that they didn’t block the entryway.
The refrigerator in the dining area was packed off into the kitchen…
… and the old, large TV unit made the perfect crockery unit in here.
Though all the main elements, including the dining table and chairs, remained the same in the dining area..
Little details, like changing the two chairs at the ends of the table, the silk blinds and the beautiful Moroccan pendants, gave the dining space a completely refreshed look.
There were so many beautiful elements in this room and it didn’t make sense to change them for the sake of change. What we did here was to keep everything we loved and add on elements to further enhance and beautify it.

Which brings us to the end of our haveli style living room reveal. When you get to play dress up to an inherent beauty you really can’t go wrong. We had beautiful bones in this room to work with, and I think we did a good job of getting it right.

Until next time,
What tiles are these? Athangudi or ceramic. Need them for my home in Hyderabad
These are cement tiles. Don’t know which vendor they are from because they came with the home.
Not my personal style but absolutely loved what I see here. You definitely create magic. I love the floor tiles and the wallpaper most of all. Only you can pull of something like this for sure 😊
Thank you Varsha. That you like it even though it’s not your style means a lot. I so enjoy makeovers like this one.. where I can go all out and create a magical ambience. I have to thank my client for the blind faith they had in me. It wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
This is so lovely…the elements you added definately added magic to this place but it also made me realise the power of re arranging certain furniture pieces…it makes such a huge difference…loved reading th blog as always 😁
Thanks Pallavi. Yes, that’s true. Always… ALWAYS start with the layout. A good plan can always be dressed up well. But no point of a pretty space that doesn’t function well.
It is Gorgeous. Magical effect. Loved the room
Completely mesmerizing! Loved the play of colours..kind of brought life to the room🙂..Great job!
Thank you Shubhaa!
Thank you!! 🙂
OMG OMG OMG!! The last time I saw magic with my own eyes was when I saw Mr.P.C. Sorkar. This time the magic has happened in my own house. Can anything else make me feel more special? Not only the end but the journey too was a miracle. Everything that happened was beyond our imagination. So finally we surrendered and let Rittika spin her wand effortlessly. Thankyou Rittika… For creating this masterpiece for us.
Rashi Kumar
🙂 I have SO enjoyed this makeover Rashi. The faith you put in me and the free hand you gave me is what truly allowed magic to be created. Wishing all of you a whole lot happy times in your magical space!
