Today I will be introducing the second space from our Modern Vintage Home, what we will be making into a beautiful haveli style living room. As you scroll through the pics of this home below, you will see that it has been made with a lot of love and thought to detail.
Beautifully patterned cement tile floors and solid wood doors adorn this vintage style home and that’s a great base to build on.
Our residents though, moved into this home in a hurry. Which means they shifted in with all their existing furniture. They didn’t really have time to worry about what style and what look they wanted.
Now that they are settled in they’re taking the time to do up their home a room at a time.
The Plan:
Which brings us to this living room. Here we have the plan.
The Living Area:
We enter the living room through this short passage.
A glimpse of that exquisite floor and you get an idea of what lies ahead. The clients were very keen to change the flooring because it is stained in little patches. But I would never have forgiven myself if we had done that. I think the stains only add to the old world charm. I would love to use this beautiful floor as a starting point of our design.
The living area has been divided into two parts. As soon as you enter the living room you have the main seating area. Open shelves separate this from the window side.
Further ahead, by the window, is a raised wooden platform on which they have a study table and a sofa-cum-bed.
They don’t really want a study here, but were looking for an extra sleeping space for their son. We suggested they move the sofa-cum bed to the opposite side so that the partition gives the bed some privacy.
We will add a couple of chairs on this side so that the window area continues to be a part of the living room seating during the day.
We’re also shifting the TV onto the entrance wall. The TV unit will be narrower than the existing seating is, and won’t block the passage. Also, right now the TV is on one side. If we put it in the centre, it also makes TV viewing easier.
The Dining Area:
The dining table lies to one side of the living room. Right now this area is crowded with the fridge and a whole lot of side boards lined up along the wall.
We’ve made space for the fridge in the kitchen and shifted it inside. We’ll put one large sideboard against the dining wall for storage of crockery.
In this pic you’ll see the beautiful wooden doors to all the rooms and wardrobes. Notice the old style metal chain on the right most door? All these vintage touches put together inspired our decision on what we want this living room to look like.
Haveli Style Living Room:
The bright coloured patterned floors and all that beautiful wood work reminded me of a trip to Rajasthan. We stayed in an old haveli converted into a 20 odd room boutique hotel and images from that stay kept flashing in my mind when I saw this space.
I love how the patterned floor and textured wall here are paired with a modern style sofa in silk. The idea will be to use textures, patterns, fabrics and fittings to give us a vintage look with a modern feel.
A little bit of ornamentation with traditional carvings and lamps will add to the vintage ambience.
And traditional fabrics and furnishing will complete the look.
We’ve started work on this beautiful space and you know how exciting the use of colours and patterns is to me… I am really looking forward to see how this haveli style living room turns out!

Until next time,
So beautifully done. Plus what’s really helpful is the Before and After pics.
Thank you Farhin! I think they are also the most fun 🙂
Ritika I wanted your opinion regarding the use of cement tiles in the living dining area . Do you think it’s worth the effort and time !
Hey Anuradha.. that would depend a lot on what everything else in the space is like.. we don’t select individual finishes.. it’s a whole mood board we put together before we start..
Rittika, we are enjoying this journey of restyling the house with your vision . Like always, the picture you have in mind is way beyond ours. So now we know better. We just follow your dream and enjoy the journey to the magical world you spin. Thank you so much for your brilliant ideas.
And I love the faith you have in me and the freedom you’ve given me to design your home.. thank you!
Looking forward to see the completion of this project.
I’m really excited about it too! 🙂
Whose place are you doing up?It looks familiar…!
Haha! That’s a question for a DM 🙂
This is so exquisite. The details and the accent mirror are too good to be true. Loved the part1
Thanks Vrinda! I’m looking forward to this makeover too!
