It’s been two months since I started sharing this lovely home with you, and I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of this beautiful journey already. Today, we’ll wrap up this home tour with a walk through the Guest Room of Taru.

Guest Room Of Taru

The fourth and last bedroom of this home is different from the rest in one way. Though it is large like the other bedrooms, it doesn’t have a walk-in-closet attached to it. So this one was automatically designated the Guest Room of Taru.

‘Guest Room’ though, is not its only function. This room doubles as a home office for the client when he needs to work from home. It also triples as a family room for movie nights or game nights. Given that it would be used in all possible ways, we kept the set up flexible. Let me show you how.

The Plan

We placed the sofa cum bed right in the centre of the longest wall. The TV unit comes directly in front of the sofa.  As always the study table is placed close to the window for access to maximum natural light.

Instead of using one large coffee table, we went with a coffee table island to allow for more flexibility. It’s easier to put away to one side when the sofa cum bed has been opened out. It also makes two tables instead of one if, say, the girls are playing a board game while mommy gets some work done.

That leaves storage space. As I said earlier, this room doesn’t have a walk-in-closet. Since all the family members have their own walk-in-areas with plenty of storage, we decided to do away with wardrobes here completely. Instead, we placed a large chest of drawers on the other side of the sofa. It provides more than enough storage space for guests visiting for a few days.

The Sofa Wall

The layout here is pretty simple. We placed the sofa cum bed at the centre of the wall, with the study table on one side and the chest of drawers on the other.

By now you know we prefer to keep the study table near the window wherever possible. Bright natural light, fresh air and a seat with a view never hurt anyone at work!

On the other side of the sofa we have a large chest of drawers. Assuming two cabinets of the same size, I personally find that drawers give a lot more storage space than shelves, simply because it’s easier to organise your things in drawers. So a large chest of 6 drawers gives plenty of room for visitors to keep and organise their things.

Instead of picking a single large coffee table, we decided to go for a coffee table island. The client was worried about picking up and putting away a large table every time they open out the sofa cum bed. A larger table would be more difficult to lift up, and would take up more space when kept to one side.

Considering that this space is also their family room, we figured a pair of tables gives more flexibility in terms of use too. You can pull the tables apart with one person using each to do their own thing. So opting for an island was a win-win situation in all ways.

The TV Wall

Opposite the sofa we had just enough space for a television between the bedroom and bathroom doors. We placed a large sideboard to work as the TV unit. This once again adds storage space to the room, and doubles up as office storage for the client to keep his files and paperwork.

Look and Feel

If the deep blues of the master bedroom reminded you of the oceans in this nature inspired home, then the light wood tones in this guest room are reminiscent of clear blue summer skies.

We started with this pretty rug which gets the colour tones just right. I love how even the light brown goes so well with the light wood we’ve used for most of the furniture here.

The sofa is the largest piece of furniture here. We found this handsome checked fabric that once again fits right in with the colour tones of the room – the light blue of the skies and the light brown of the furniture pieces.

The powder blue cushions amplify the blues. Though they aren’t really checks, the pattern on the cushion fabric does give an illusion of checks, doesn’t it?

Finally, we went with a simple shelf above the sofa for decor. It’s a narrow shelf to place small decor items and plants. It’s great for displaying artwork too. Just keep the artwork on the shelf and rest it against the wall. It also allows for flexibility in changing artwork. Since we’re not drilling holes into the walls, the art can be easily moved around or switched.

Finally the drapes are light and breezy too. The heavy curtains have a floral motif in blue and brown, while the sheers have a thin vertical cord woven into the fabric to make light stripes.

Before and Afters

Here are a few before and afters so you can see how a void space transformed into this gentle room.

The main sofa wall…

The sofa is placed exactly in the centre with the study table on one side and the chest of drawers on the other. A coffee table island in front of the sofa completes this set up.

The study corner near the window…

The study table, placed near the window, makes a well lit quiet corner to get work done.

The wall opposite the sofa…

A large sideboard acts as a TV unit and also adds additional storage space in this room.

The guest room of Taru is a multifunctional space and we designed it keeping this in mind. It serves as a fun family room, a serene office space, and a warm, welcoming space for guests. The light furniture allows the client flexibility to use it in different ways as per the requirement. And the light colours and finishes make it a pleasant, happy space for all.

But then, being in nature is always a relaxing and happy experience. Which is why every corner of this nature inspired home is delightful. If you’ve toured all of this home with me, I think you’ll agree. If you haven’t, you’ve missed out. Click here to start the tour right away!
