So happy to share a new project we completed recently, the Dee Residence. I’m starting the tour of this beautiful home today with it’s subtly vibrant, having a hundred shades of grey, living room.

Grey Living Room

The Plan

This is an ‘L’ shaped living room which means that it is easy to separate the living and dining areas.

One arm of the ‘L’ makes our living area with seating going right around in a cosy circle. It further leads into a tiny balcony.

The perpendicular arm of the ‘L’, opposite the kitchen, fits in our dining table and chairs. On the far wall we have a beautiful bar.

The little no-man’s-land at the corner of the ‘L’ makes a perfect spot for an entryway.

The Entryway

Since we don’t have a separate entryway in this home, we made use of this wall near the entry door to make one. A simple, mid-century sideboard serves as the shoe cabinet. We had it custom made to fit in the music player.

Grey Living Room

That striking brass mirror complements the sideboard perfectly and serves well for a last look before leaving the home.

The Living Area

The clients love to entertain and have friends over and were clear they wanted their TV area to be separate from the living area. This worked wonderfully. We planned our seating right around the living room to make a cosy, comfortable and inviting space.

Grey Living Room

On one side we have a three seater sofa with comfortable accent chairs on either side.

Grey Living Room

The opposite side has a lighter two seater with poufs that are easy to move around as required.

Grey Living Room

We used lighter furniture pieces to fit in more seating and yet have the living room looking spacious.

The Balcony

At the far end of the living room, the sliding doors open out to a tiny little balcony.

Grey Living Room

They pretty much had this balcony in mind when they said ‘good things come in small packages’.

Sit back on that chair with a cup of tea in the morning, a mug of beer in the afternoon or a glass of wine when the stars are out. The tiled ledge makes a good bar counter to place drinks and snacks.

Drag out a pouf from the living room when you have company. And the chair can be folded and put away whenever required.

Grey Living Room

The Dining Area

To one side of the living room and right opposite the kitchen door, we have our dining space. We wanted to keep that passage free and unobstructed, so pushed the dining table to one side with a bench against the wall.

Grey Living Room

On the far end of the dining table, we have our bar area.

We designed a custom bar unit to fit into this space. The largest drawers at the bottom hold all the bottles. The medium sized drawers hold the glassware. The smallest drawers are just right for napkins, stirrers, bottle openers and a whole range of bar accessories.

Shades Of Grey Living Room

What they liked best about our work, and the reason these homeowners came to me, was the way we use colour and pattern to make ‘warm, livable spaces’. And yet, they are simple and modest people who didn’t want an overwhelming space. They wanted a subtle vibe to their living room.

The Gold…

The colour scheme of this shades of grey living room came to us with this beautiful wallpaper. I shared so many options with them, in different design styles and colours. When they finally picked this one, I knew exactly how to give them the subtle yet vibrant living room they were looking for.

Grey Living Room

Grey and gold pairs together so gracefully. We had already selected this rich wood tone for all the furniture and it complemented the grey and gold perfectly.

And so came about this shades of grey living room embellished with brass accents. We started with the customised brass inlay and brass knobs of the bar unit. The brass mirror above was chosen to span the expanse of that wall without covering the wallpaper behind it.

The side tables brought the brass to our living room.

Grey Living Room

… And The Greys

The soft, self design on the sofa upholstery to the various patterns and prints on the other seating, brought our shades of grey into play.

We decided to go with yellows and oranges as accent colours, inspired by the brass.

This rug, finally brought it all together. It was initially available only in another colour. Though we loved the pattern, it just wasn’t fitting in with the rest of this living room because it had no grey in it.

We had it customised for us with a black background and what a stunning piece it turned out to be. It is now available as the ‘Black Ariyona Carpet’ online and I’ve linked to it in the ‘Shop The Look’ section below.

Before & Afters

A quick look at these so you get a true sense of the transformation.

The entrance wall of the home…

… which we transformed into a beautiful entryway.

The sofa wall to the left…

The opposite side of the living room…

… once again adorned with seating to make a warm, inviting space to catch up with friends.

Grey interiors don’t get enough love! I usually prefer a more minimalistic approach, but this is very lively, and the green plants are obviously a must!

Only the doors are laminated. We’ve used 431RD by Royale Touche.

I feel that the living room is a bit too overcrowded for me (too many pillows maybe?), so not enough attention is drawn to that gorgeous carpet imho. The reste of the house is enchanting, especially that mirror in the dining area.
