We are finally here with Krishna’s greige kitchen reveal.. and I am really excited about how it turned out. It did cross my mind, during the planning stages, that since we’re not changing the counters, tiles or flooring in the kitchen, how much of a difference will we really be able to make. I wanted to work some ‘magic’ on it, I just wasn’t sure how. So after waiting all these months I’m thrilled to say that we did manage to sprinkle some magic dust, and I hope this greige kitchen reveal makes you as happy as it makes me!

The Plan:

Let’s first start with the plan. If you remember, we had given Krishna 3 layouts to choose from. (In case you missed that, you can read about them here.) This is the layout we eventually finalised.

To execute this, we had to first start by closing the existing door (which was where the breakfast counter in this plan is), and opening a new door by breaking the wall along the entrance passage.

The Floor:

The problem we faced here was this. When you break a wall, you have to fill in the floor where the wall stood. The existing flooring in the kitchen and passage is a creamy marble. We would need a narrow, 5 foot long strip of marble, exactly matching the existing marble, to fill in the gap in the floor left by the broken wall. That is an almost impossible task. Different lots of even the same marble can vary a lot in shade and pattern. To get a completely different marble that would match with the existing one was very unlikely.

We also didn’t want to spend on redoing an entire floor which was otherwise perfectly good. So we decided to lay a completely contrasting floor so that the change in flooring looks intentional, and not like a mistake. This is what we did.

We were anyway looking to get the greys in to make the beige and cream kitchen into a greige one. I found these beautiful tiles that I fell instantly in love with and they suited the purpose perfectly. We layed them right across the entrance where we had pulled the wall down, then took them in a random zig-zag manner a little further into the kitchen. It solved the problem of the missing marble at the door without having to change the entire flooring.

What was supposed to be an easy way out of a problem was a blessing in disguise. It gave us a ‘designer’ floor right at the entrance.

Adding In More Greys:

We had told you in the last post that Krishna loves her greys. Now here she was, stuck with a beige kitchen, which she didn’t want to break down just to swap colours. We had promised her we would add the greys to make it our version of ‘greige’. We decided to do that with the cabinets.

White always goes with everything. Also, since the kitchen is not too big, white would help it to look more spacious. So we largely went with white cabinets. To these, we added a few grey shutters to bring in the greys.

And then we had the breakfast table to play with. Since we were making that entirely from scratch, we could pretty much do what we pleased there. We added our hints of grey to that too.

The Breakfast Counter:

We started off with a plywood base which we framed in wood and fitted with tiles so that it’s easy to clean and maintain in a kitchen. The wall above it is the first thing you see as you enter the home. So it had to be eye-catching enough to make that first great impression, yet simple enough to make it look like a part of the kitchen.

First came the wall paper. We loved the textured stripes on this one. The colours are perfect for our grey theme and the texture makes a great contrast to all those glossy cabinets.

Next, we wanted some simple artwork for the wall. We looked at a lot of options, till Krishna found these stashed away somewhere.

Could we use these on the kitchen wall? Absolutely. I liked the simple, bold, almost black and white graphics. But I didn’t think those frames would look good on our wallpaper. So we had them reframed, and they really stood out on the wall paper.

The last thing left were the lights. We wanted our lights here to work as both, task lights and accent lights. These striking, black pendants fit in perfectly. They accentuate the photographs, light up the breakfast table and the black silhouettes against the wallpaper works as a piece of art in itself.

Krishna’s Greige Kitchen Reveal:

And that, for you, is our greige kitchen reveal. Let me show you a few before-afters so you can see it as a whole.

If you look at the ‘before’ pic carefully, you’ll notice that the original entrance to the kitchen is from the right side. In the ‘after’ pic you can see that is now the breakfast counter. We broke open the wall right ahead to make the new entrance.

Standing at the entrance of the kitchen, this is what you see. The sink, hob and fridge are to the right, while the breakfast table and the appliances counter is to the left.

This is our main working counter. We kept the original counter as is, and added storage cabinets to it.

We shifted the geyser up higher to fit in our cabinets. We have a couple of grey drawers here in our otherwise all white furniture. The grey fridge fits in beautifully too!

After

And this is our breakfast counter wall. We closed this door to the kitchen and placed our breakfast counter in front of the wall.

The kitchen is now protected from a direct view from the living room… and we have an additional breakfast counter which we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to fit in.

Get The Look:

We haven’t changed most of our kitchen here. The counters, wall tiles and flooring is what came with the house and was left as is. But if you like any of the new stuff we’ve put in, here’s where you can find it.Krishna's Greige Kitchen Reveal

| – 1 – Cabinets: PU Glossy White | – 2 – Cabinets: PU Glossy Dark Shadow | – 3 – Wallpaper: The Grey Lines | – 4 – 2″ x 2″ Tiles: Picollo Mosaic Silk -S1 White | – 5 – Metal Bar Stool | – 6 – Herringbone Tile From Adenwala Marbles, Fort |

.

That about wraps up our greige kitchen reveal. We gave an entirely new look to a kitchen without changing any of basics that came with it.

I would love to know what you what you think of this makeover, so do write in with your thoughts in the comments below.

Until next time,
