Today I bring to you the final reveal from our Blue Door Project, this gorgeous green master bedroom.
One of the first things the client said to me when we met to plan this home, was that she loves colour. They wanted a bright, happy home bursting with colour. If you’ve been following all the reveals from this home, you’ll realise we gave them just that. From bright pinks and oranges in our little girl’s room to the unusual lavender in the guest room to forever blues with pops of pink in the living, we’ve got a whole lot of happy spaces in this home.
And then finally, we have this gorgeous green master bedroom. We went back and forth on the colours here before eventually settling on green.
But that comes later. Let’s start with the plan.
The Plan:
Though this room is larger than many bedrooms I’ve seen, the odd shape made it a little tricky to design.
As seen in the plan, there is only one long wall in this bedroom. We could use it to place either the wardrobes or the bed.
If we placed the bed along the long wall, we could only fit in a teeny-tiny wardrobe. If we placed the wardrobes along it, there wasn’t enough place to have side tables on either side of the bed. You can see below, that storage won over side tables.
We did come up with a solution to having no side tables though, which I’ll show you as we go along.
The first plan for this home was made just before lockdown and included bookshelves to the left of the window as our clients love reading.
Soon after that the lockdown was declared and work-from-home became a norm. And we realised that our plan would be incomplete without provision for a work space. Keep reading further to see how we fit that in too.
The Wardrobe Wall
The first thing you see as you enter the master bedroom is the wardrobe wall. This wall had a long vertical window running right down the middle. We didn’t want to block that off permanently, yet the client didn’t want it open with sunlight filtering in early in the morning.
A row of shelves in front of the window took care of that problem. It also broke the monotony of what would have been an entire wall of wardrobe shutters.
After trying every which way, we realised that the best use of the niche would be made by not separating it from the rest of the room. Instead we had the wardrobes going down the entire length of the wall and into the niche.
At the far end we placed a full length mirror, with a narrow vertical unit beside it, to make the dressing corner. Since it’s the furthermost corner of the room it gives a natural privacy to the dressing area. With no natural light available, we made sure to provide enough artificial light so that dressing is convenient and easy.
The Bed Wall
Between the niche and the space required to open the bedroom door, we had just enough wall space to fit in the bed.
But we had no space on either side to fit in side tables. On the left, a side table would block entry into the niche. On the right it would get in the way of the door.
A little space is essential though, to keep a book, your phone or your spectacles by your bedside when you sleep. We took care of this by making a thicker headboard. The four inch width doesn’t take much space, is not obvious to the eye, and yet provides a place for some basic bedside essentials.
The Bookshelves
The wide strip of wall between the bathroom door and the sliding windows to the balcony provided us just enough space to fit in these bookshelves.
We had initially planned equidistant shelves running from floor to ceiling along this wall.
To begin with, the client didn’t want an office area in the home. It suddenly became an essential when lockdown was declared. Yet, they wanted only a temporary space to use in case of emergency.
We adjusted our bookshelf to fit a folding study table into it. At most times, they can continue to use this as a book shelf. When required, they can drop down a part of the shelf to make just the right sized ‘table’ to fit in a laptop. We have provided plug points on the side for all electronic gadgets required.
Gorgeous Green Master Bedroom
The master bedroom had to have a quiet, serene vibe to make it a place of rest and recovery after a long busy day. Yet, the client wanted a pop of colour in here too. After weighing in many colours, we finally settled on green. After all, it’s nature’s colour of tranquility, isn’t it?
We started with the soft greyish green pattern on the drapes, contrasted by the bolder and deeper green pattern on the sheers.
Since the wardrobes were occupying an entire wall, we kept them white. Edge profile handles ensured that side didn’t look too busy.
Next came the bedding. A soft green bedspread to balance the brighter green patterns on the headboard and quilt and whites and greys on the cushions to soften the look.
We continued with the grey on the artwork and on the runners on either side of the bed.
Finally, wood on the doors, bookshelves and the vertical niche in the wardrobes added the required warmth to our gorgeous green master bedroom.
We also went with green to the back of the bookshelves to brighten up that corner.
Before & After
Let me take you through a few before and afters so you get a true sense of the transformation.
The wardrobe wall, with the vertical window in the middle.
White wardrobes went along the entire length of the wall, leaving space for a vertical niche with shelves along the window.
The bed wall, with not much space left between the niche and the bedroom door.
Our bed fit perfectly into the given space, with the dressing going inside the niche.
Opposite the bed we had a strip of wall between the bathroom door and the sliding doors to the balcony.
Our bookshelves, with a folding study table, fit well into this space.
And finally, a view from the wardrobe side of the room…
… shows you how much we’ve managed to fit into this space!

Just wish you were here in satara!😊
Aah! So lovely rittika! The green master bedroom and the entire home looks so pleasant! You have used the odd niches so beautifully like a bar unit, dressing unit and love the bookshelf with extendable table! Cute! 👍♥️
Thanks so much Gouri. Yes, this is a warm, happy home to come home to! 🙂
It’s looking absolutely gorgeous, lived the whole concept and serenity.
Congratulations on a beautiful master bedroom! Lovely use of space. I really like the headboard fabric. I’m not sure how the four inch depth headboard helps to serve in lieu of bedside tables. Are the wall light fixtures controlled by switches on the side of the headboard? Do they put their glasses, book on top of the headboard?
Thanks B! Yes, the light switches are on the side of the headboard. And yes, that 4″ is enough space to be able to keep a phone, glasses, book on top of the headboard when they get into bed..
