Next up on the tour of Taru, we have the kids rooms. Though the decor is inspired by nature, completely in keeping with the rest of the home, these rooms are younger, livelier, and more fun than the rest of the home. We’ll walk through girl’s room 1 of Taru today and I’ll show you the second one next week.
Girl’s Room 1 of Taru
Pretty flowers, flying birds and a swing by the window with an amazing view. Walking into our little girls room is like stepping out for an evening walk in the park. It’s a large spacious room that we didn’t clutter up with too much furniture. So the vibe is open, airy.. and truly one with nature.
The Plan
This large bedroom is made larger by the fact that it has a small walk in closet attached to it. Which means there is no need to put wardrobes in the bedroom. This automatically makes the bedroom look larger.
We placed the bed on the long wall of the bedroom, but not in the centre of it. Placing it closer to the door gave us more space by the window to place the study table and the swing.
There is always a huge advantage to placing a study table near a window. It means the table is awash with natural light all day, and that is an incomparable benefit.
It was the same with the swing. This bedroom has a wide, unobstructed view of the city. The swing by the window takes full advantage of that view.
We fit in a compact ‘L’ shaped wardrobe in the walk-in area. One part is deeper to fit in the hangers. The other is a little narrower with shelves for storage.
Let me show you how this plan took shape.
The Bed Wall
The bed is placed along the longest continuous wall of this room, leaving more space towards the window to fit in the swing.
The upholstered panel on the lower half runs right across the length of this wall, and doubles up as a headboard behind the bed.
There is a bedside table with a drawer on both sides of the bed.
The Study Wall
Exactly opposite the swing, we have the study table.
The arched bookshelf above the study table goes well with the scallops on the opposite wall, and makes space for extra books and toys.
The Walk In Closet
Once we put the wardrobes into the teeny-tiny walk-in space, it became teenier-tinier still. Imagine shutting the door to this closet space. You would be standing in a 3’x4′ space feeling completely claustrophobic, with all the walls closing in around you.
Stick on some mirrors on to the wardrobe shutters, throw in a magic spell or two, and voila, we multiplied the space manifold in the blink of an eye!
Look & Feel
All our selections for this room started with this pretty mural. Our little girl’s favourite colour is lavender, and you can see the various shades of lilac, mauve and purple that we have used in this customised wallpaper.
The scalloped wall panel makes a pretty wainscoting that reminds me very much of a picket fence running around a garden. We had it upholstered so that it also doubles as a headboard for the bed. It is finished in a leatherette which doesn’t dirty as easily as fabric, and is also easier to clean when it does.
We picked a mauve for the scallops so that it stays the predominant colour in the bedroom even with all the other colours used in the wallpaper.
This hammock swing chair is my favourite part of this room. The white cotton canvas has a natural texture, yet keeps the foreground simple, allowing the scallops and mural in the background to shine out.
For the same reason, we went with light selections for the curtains. The sheer curtains have small flowers embroidered on them, in keeping with the floral mural. The heavy drapes are pastel stripes.
The study table used here already belonged to the client. We repolished it to match the veneer used in the home and added the arched bookshelf on top for additional storage.
We threw in a few pops of brightness with the lumbar cushion and the quilt. They make the room peppier and more cheerful.
I also love the terrazzo wall sconce. It fits right in with its colour, shape and playful vibe.
Before and Afters
Here are a few before and afters from Girl’s Room 1 of Taru.
The bed wall…
.. is the star of this room. The scalloped ‘picket fence’ panel with the floral mural above set the tone of the room beautifully.
The study corner…
We placed the study table near the window for an unlimited supply of natural light to work in.
The wee little walk in closet..
‘L’ shaped storage with mirror shutters helped us make the most of this space in terms of form and function.
