Now that we’ve entered this beautiful home and had a walk around the foyer, let’s turn the corner into the entertainment cum guest room of Sylver.
Entertainment Cum Guest Room of Sylver
This multifunctional room can not only be used for more than one function, but also in more than one way. We can use it as a closed room with four walls. We can also make two of the walls disappear so that it doesn’t look like a separate room at all, but an extension of the living room.
Sounds like a bit of magic, doesn’t it? I had shared a video of how these walls collapse on my Instagram feed. You can take a quick look below..

Today we’ll have a look at this room closed, as the entertainment cum guest room of Sylver. I will also share views of the room with the walls open later on, as part of the living room. So let’s get started.
The Plan
This plan is the original, when we had decided to give the room collapsible walls without thinking about how we would do it. We thought we would have the two walls slide into the two corners of the room.
But I just didn’t like the thought of disjointed walls in ‘steps’ when they were pulled shut. They can be seen directly from the living room and so they had to be neatly finished, lying side by side to make an even surface. We found just the right fitting to help us do that.
Now, not only do the sections align perfectly with each other, they also come and stack all together into one corner instead of two. So right near the TV we made a pocket. Each section slides into it and they all neatly lock inside it when the room is left open.
The layout here is very simple. There is a large TV here with a long unit below it. A sofa in front of it for comfortable viewing. This also opens out into a bed when this space has to be used as a guest room.
The temple fits in beautifully into the corner.
The TV Wall
Since the main function of this room is for television viewing, this is the most important part of the room. We planned the TV in such a way that not only is it centred to the sofa, but also to the dining table which lies behind the sofa when the walls are open.
So you can watch television just as comfortably from the dining table as from the sofa in this room.
Given the size of the television we needed a really long TV unit to sit under it. So we had this custom made on site. We used cane and wood, natural materials to add warmth to the cement texture which runs all over the room.
The Sofa Wall
You can see in this picture how each leaf of the partition lies side by side with the one next to it. Since this is a foldable partition, we couldn’t hang artwork on it. It is one of the reasons we decided to go with the texture here… to give the walls some character of their own, so that you don’t mind so much that they are blank.
The Folding Partition
The ‘column’ you can see on the right of the door is the pocket we made for the sliding doors. Each of these doors slides in front of the pocket from the passage side and then slides into it. (Take a look at the video above)
So when the walls are open, as is most of the time, all you see is that single column. The walls are pulled shut only when they have house guests.
The Temple
The mandir had to fit into the right hand corner of this room. Considering the rustic vibe with all the cement texture, I couldn’t imagine placing a delicate temple here in marble or carved wood. It would be a complete misfit.
Instead, we decided to integrate the mandir into the cement texture. We paneled the strip of wall in line with the curtain pelmet and carved out niches into it.
I love how we’ve maintained the rustic vibe, yet the lamps in the niches give the temple a touch of delicate magic.
Look and Feel
Though that cement texture is fabulous, an all grey space can go wrong very quickly. Before you know it, it can start looking dull and cold.
Wood always adds warmth and black always adds some spunk and so we decided to use both generously.
We carried this across the room with black and white patterns to break all the monotony. Wood and black metal furniture add warmth with a modern industrial vibe, again going perfectly with our cement texture.
We definitely wanted to add colour to this space. But we didn’t want a frivolous colour that would devalue the richness of the texture.
I was looking for a colour that exudes luxury and subtlety all at once, and purple seemed like the only right choice.
As always I started my selections with this rug.
We carried the hues of the rug into our upholstery fabric and cushions, and everything tied in with each other flawlessly.
Before and Afters
Finally, we’ll end this tour of the entertainment cum guest room of Sylver with a few before and afters.
The first view as you enter this room…
The mandir went on the strip of wall by the window, with drapes framing it all beautifully.
As you turn around to face the sofa…
… you notice the sliding doors enclosing the room perfectly when in need of privacy.
Opposite the sofa…
… a large television with a beautiful, custom made TV unit below it have us set for all the entertainment that we need!
