Diwali is round the corner again and I have been trying to come up with some new Diwali decor ideas for my home this year. Now I do realise that ‘new’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘never done before’. It usually means ‘put together differently’. Isn’t that what we normally do? Use the same diyas, flowers and rangoli in different ways to come up with a different look?
And I thought that the best way to come up with many different looks would be to use many different heads to think them up. So I reached out to my favourite decoristas and asked them to help. Festivals are a time of reaching out to and celebrating with people, so I can’t help but say this. You would think that since we’re all in the same space doing the same thing, we would be ‘competing’ with each other and at each other’s throats, right? It’s what I expected when I started blogging 2 years back. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that I was completely wrong.
These ladies are all not only amazing decoristas but also strong women and beautiful people. They are always enthusiastic and ever willing to help. And here they are today, with their favourite Diwali decor ideas that always work for them.
Diwali Decor Ideas:
I have never before seen so many pretty pics and so much inspiration all at one place. This one post will give you plenty Diwali decor ideas for your whole home. So let’s get right to it… here are my absolute favourite decor bloggers, in alphabetical order, sharing their top Diwali decor ideas with us.
Disha | Design, Decor & Disha
Diwali is the most exuberant time of the year. In India festivals and enthusiasm go hand in hand. So when Rittika came up with this idea of sharing Diwali decor ideas on her blog, I enthusiastically accepted the invitation.
Diwali is my most favorite festival. I like to go the extra mile to make it memorable for my family and friends. The first thing is to decide the color palette. I sew some cushion covers and use other DIYs to accessorise in similar hues. Rugs and curtains also reflect the selected shades for a cohesive look.
Flowers are great for calming an overactive mind and to rejuvenate our souls during the hustle bustle of the festivals hence I place them in every corner of my home.
Sometimes it’s brass and sometimes it’s silver for me that plays an important role in creating festive vignettes. This year I’m planning to take out my brassware, unlike last year when I displayed silverware.
My tablescape will be sparkling with a warm ambience. Candles and diyas will be used around the centrepiece which I will create using string lights and flowers.
That’s all that I plan to do this Diwali. I wish you all a very joyous and prosperous Diwali.

Divya | Desi DIY
The two most important elements in my Diwali decor are urli decoration and rangoli. Urlis are traditionally used in south India. Decorating them is simple and quick. All you need to do is add some water, beautiful flowers / petals and some floating candles.
Diwali is also the best time to showcase your rangoli. It is usually done at doorsteps, near the puja or in a corner of the room. Rangoli stencils come really handy to help you make cleaner patterns. Add diyas to your rangoli to make it look spectacular.
A lot of homes use floral rangolis which are much easier to do. You can use flowers and petals of different colours to make them.

Hemal | Villa Marigold
This year for Diwali I am looking at using jewel tones with hints of gold. Ruby and emerald tones with gold details added by vintage brass that I have collected or inherited over the years.
One idea for Diwali that never lets me down is to group together my vintage brass and silver items in a big thaal (platter) add flowers, candles or fairy lights and viola! My aim is to create a subtle festive vibe.
Texture in the form of table runner made from vintage zari dresses adds a bit more bling.
I have draped a piece of ikat fabric on the sofa for a dash of ruby red. Cushions in emerald and blue complete the picture for me. This is now my starting festive canvas and I will keep adding a few elements as we approach Diwali day. Maybe more candles, incense burners and plants.

Nain | House Of 9 Design
One decor idea that always works for me during Diwali is rich fabrics with brass accents & flowers. This Diwali I played with fairy lights as well— it brings magic & gives you a whimsical feel.
A must in my home and always used in festive decor for us Kodavas is a Thook Bolcha, a sacred lamp. I usually prefer sticking to one flower when I decorate the it for Diwali. So last year I went with garlands of jasmine.
The Nila Vilakku diya is a lamp from Kerala that most South Indian homes have. I usually use both these lamps during festivities.
And finally, you can never go wrong with a brass urli with floating flowers (floating candles is an option too). Although I love traditional decor, I also like to freshen things up so I’ve added in lanterns and candles to the mix while styling my centre table.

Neha | Art By Armaya
For my mother-in-Law and I, Diwali is just another excuse to add something new to our decor collection. Since our home has a typical Indian traditional vibe, these are the few guidelines we use for our decor.
1. Fresh flowers such as marigolds, tuberose, gladioli, gerbera etc. and brass are a match made in heaven. Not only can you have them in strands, they also look beautiful floating in water.
2. Use brass diyas for added effect. If not brass, terracotta ones work wonderfully too.
3. Fairy lights add an interesting dimension to this festival. You can have them in mason jars, old liquor bottles, lanterns, around flower pots… pretty much anything.
My favourite corner in our home is in the living room where the exquisitely carved brass Ganesha, the Buddha and the Tara idols all co-exist happily with a huge brass urli. I do up this corner every year with marigold and tuberose/rose strands and floating LED candles.
The beautiful Buddha idol on the credenza is flanked by an antique tall lassi glass and a gorgeous handmade pottery vase/tray. MIL simply decorated it with fresh long leaves from her garden. I love this elegant space.
The Laxmi Pooja is setup in the family room and again has indoor plants, fresh flower bouquets, fairy lights, and lots of silverware.

Nupur | Life Across The Seven Seas
We can smell the arrival of Diwali in the air days before its arrival. I love the excitement it brings with it and my favorite part of this festival is decking up our home with some bling, jazz, glitz and glamour. My home decor style is global desi, eclectic with boho touches in some corners, so you will see a mix of traditional and modern flair adorning my coffee table or in the tablescapes.
Staying outside of India makes me miss marigold during this time which somehow signifies Diwali. I remember my mom’s staircase, entryway, Pooja room – all adorned with bright yellow marigold garlands and that intoxicating smell always stayed with us . So to recreate the scenes from my childhood here in Canada, I always try to attempt to add the yellow marigold touch in some way or the other. As you see in the pictures, my daughter helped me make these DIY paper marigolds and they just looked great in the setting.
Ofcourse, my décor would never be complete without Buddhas and Ganeshas, so they go hand in hand when I create my vignettes. They definitely add the sense of calmness and peace!

Pinky | Pinkz Passion
Brass is my everyday gold… I use it often and sometimes unnecessarily. Pretty gold and glitter that highlights the glamorous side of the season is my sure-shot way to get in the festive mode.
Not that our home needs help in the looking good department but Diwali surely does wonders. With an array of enchanting brass pieces we own, I don’t need a better excuse than Diwali to deck the home with my brass galore..
The impeccable and uber stylish appearance of our brass quintessentially reflects the traditional tone of the season. Without making a hole in our pockets, all I do is refresh my options and palette with the same pieces that I have been using every season.
The best suited tucked away pieces are combined with complimentary accessories to perk up the décor game in the festive season.

Preethi | Preethi Prabhu
Diwali is the only time you can take completely wacky ideas and come across as creative instead of crazy. This year sticking to my no store bought decoratives rule, I wanted to make a large center piece for the coffee table. I found this coconut tree dried flower pod by the side of the road.
It wasn’t too old coz there was hardly any dust settled on it. A quick clean up and some random sprays of gold paint, it was ready for some lights. I retained the outer shell and its organic color. It looks good and will also help hide the battery pack of the LED lights.
I have used the copper wire LED lights that I found online last season. When lit, you can hardly make out the wire. I twisted the lights on each of the extended limbs and it was ready. During the day the gold spray and the copper wire take over and look pretty. At night the lights steal the show!

Rohina | AA Living
I found the perfect Diwali centrepiece in this beautiful spangled tealight votive holder from my AA Living store. I dressed it up by placing it in a mirror’ed tray and a sprinkle of tiny fairylights (battery operated) that would further reflect the light. It goes well with my modern house but still adds that sparkle element that I love about Diwali!
You can also combine different lights to get a similar effect. Combining tealights and fairy lights together is very effective – make sure you use a large number and cluster them together to get a similar effect.
Adding them on top of any reflective surface is alays a good idea as it will maximise the impact.

Sangitha | Sajavat
Wondering how to give a festival vibe to your home? I have created a simple Diwali theme for you all using elements I already had. Firstly, gather all things related to the festival that are considered auspicious like idols of Lakshmiji and Ganesha, earthen diyas, rangoli stickers, kalasha etc. I also used my hand painted earthen diyas. This way I coordinated them with my chosen colour scheme.
Diwali is also incomplete without sweets. Instead of traditional sweets I have kept cupcake moulds filled with chocolates. You can create this decor in your entryway welcoming guests and Goddess Lakshmi blessing them with health, happiness and prosperity.

Sharon | The Key Bunch
Flowers are a versatile decor accessory for any festival especially Diwali. My favourite way to decorate with flowers is to buy (or forage) them in complementary or contrasting colours. After a trip to Scandinavia I was so in love with the dusty rose pastels and greys that I absolutely wanted them in my Diwali palette!
I place them at different heights….visually it’s a dramatic way to wow your guests. I especially love how pretty my home looks when I string them into garlands, and drape them down the length of the curtains. Such an easy and delightful way to deck up your home for a Diwali party.
We also have a tradition of making our own diyas every year. I have a salt dough diya recipe that I make with my kids and they really enjoy the activity.

Vinithra | Weespaces
For me Diwali is the time of the year when all family and friends come together and it’s all about entertaining at home. When hosting a large gathering of people, having a festive table setting is not just fun but also forms the mainstay of your décor. I love to work with fresh flowers and candles in a simple yet classic way. Flowers floating in a large Urli are traditional Indian décor in most homes.
I love to reinterpret that by floating flowers in things like a wooden boat, a glass vase, a salad bowl etc to give it a little unexpected yet festive flair. Also piling up traditional flower garlands within large glass vases or laying them on a traditional brass plate with candles can all make for some great centerpieces!
Pair with a brightly colored runner and some gold / brass utensils for an easy festive update. Happy Diwali!

Rittika | Yup, That’s Me!
Yes, believe it or not, I am one of my favourite decor bloggers too. And feeling quite proud and humbled to be able to share a decor tip or two in the same post as so many accomplished decor divas.
So in two short words, my favourite of all Diwali decor ideas would be to ‘hang it’. You know how I keep on about how things that hang and sway and twinkle add to an ‘other world’ kind of feel to a space. Last year I hung strings of marigold.. both real and faux… almost every place I could find. I used the faux garlands outside my home. The entrance looked all pretty and festive the entire two weeks of vacation, without having to change the flowers.. or do any kind of maintenance for that matter.
And inside the home I hung real garlands from literally everywhere I could find. These strings hanging from the lights above our dining table were my favourite.
They glowed a happy orange and kept us feeling festive all week.
Don’t stop at the marigold. Hang fairy lights, ribbons, tassles, flowers of any kind and loads of Diwali kandeel. And watch your home come alive for Diwali.
