Bringing to you the next beautiful space from the Dee Residence, the cozy family room. This is the third of three bedrooms and the only one without an attached bathroom. Which is why we decided to use this one as the TV / guest / cozy family room.
The Plan
The plan is simple enough. As you enter the room, you see the TV unit on the facing wall.
Opposite it, we have a sofa-cum-bed. It’s a great place to watch television every day, or pull out the bed and layer on the blankets for an extra cozy movie night. The sofa-cum-bed also helps convert the family room into a guest room whenever required.
A couple of accent chairs near the window give additional seating for the times they are watching something with friends.
The entrance wall holds storage cupboards for all the household linen and extras, and also additional storage space for guests.
The TV Wall
We went with a long, low TV unit which houses a whole lot of electronic gadgets, and yet is light on the eyes. The low unit also helped us keep the TV at eye level instead of raising it too high.
The Sofa Wall
Opposite the television we have this sofa, which opens out into a good sized double bed.
The Window
In front of the window we have two simple accent chairs. This gives us enough seating to make the family room the more casual entertaining area of the home. In a larger get-together, guests can easily spill over from the living room into this space.
The Storage Wall
We wanted to make the family room a multifunctional space. It had to work as a space for the family to hang out and watch television together, and keep the household extras. It had to make guests feel welcome, along with some space for their belongings. And all of it had to look pretty enough so that they could use this area for entertaining too.
So we decided we didn’t want the wardrobe looking like a wardrobe. It certainly didn’t have to be as deep as a regular wardrobe since they wouldn’t be using it to hang their clothes. And so we went with a storage unit that was part beautiful display and wall decor and part useful storage.
We lit up the open shelves to make it look absolutely dreamy.
Blush, White and Gold
I had suggested using lighter furniture in this room as compared to the rest of the home. We have used a darker walnut tone elsewhere, which I thought would be too heavy in this small space.
With the lighter laminate, we could use any soft colour to keep the room looking gentle and serene. For instance, blush.
The off hand suggestion right at the beginning of the design process, somehow stuck. We never considered another colour and I love how tranquil, yet happy, this room looks.
The selection of this gold table with the marble top decided what accents we were going to use.
We loved the powder blue stripe running down the blinds, and so selected this beautiful painting to bring out the blue.
Cozy Family Room
This beautiful rug seemed to bring all of these colours together… and then some.
We further layered the space with this soft throw and a whole lot of cushions to make it the cozy, warm and cheerful space that we had envisioned.
White and gold accents in our blush shelves completed the look.
And gave us this cozy family room.
Before & Afters
This room was earlier being used as the master bedroom with only a bed and wardrobe in it. We used another bedroom with an attached bath for the master bedroom, and converted this into the family room. Here is how we did it.
The blank wall as you enter the room…
… now houses the TV unit.
The wall opposite, along the entrance door…
… perfectly fits in the sofa cum bed along with two side tables.
The window wall…
… which makes a lovely alcove for additional seating.
And the old wardrobes…
… which we redesigned as shallower and more beautiful storage-cum-display.
