It’s late evening on Holi as I sit at my computer and start punching the letters on my keyboard. Did you too spend most of the day covered from head to toe in every possible colour? Dancing to the beat of loud Bollywood music under pipes of gushing water? Have you gone into withdrawal already, and started the countdown to next Holi? Do you love colour? In holi, in your life and in your home? Then this post is especially for you. You don’t have to wait for 1 day every year. Here are some exciting colourful home decor ideas to celebrate colour every day!
Colourful Home Decor:
There are some of us who really love colour. If you don’t believe there is anything such as ‘too much colour’, then the sky is the limit for you.
I love the bright colours used on pretty much every surface of this bathroom. This is sensory overload all the way! But if you want to go all the way, I would suggest you read up a little on the colour wheel and basic colour schemes here. Also, once you have selected your colours, put up samples of these next to each other to see how well they go with each other before actually finalising your selection.
For most of us, we prefer a pop of colour here and there, without this sensory overload. If you fall into this category, it is easier to add colour if your basic room scheme is in neutral tones. Use whites, cream, beige, grey… and then add your pops of colour.
Colourful Furniture & Accessories:
So if you have neutral spaces in your home, it is really easy to make them colourful by adding furniture and accent pieces in your favourite colours. Whether you use one colour or many, the neutrals will help tone it down and and keep the colours grounded.
This otherwise white bathroom has accessories in all the primary colours – red, blue and yellow – to make it colourful.
And I am loving the stools adding colour to this white kitchen…
… and these colourful chairs adding colour to the white dining table.
Colourful Furnishings:
Furnishings are a super easy way to colourful home decor. The best part is, you can change these easily to change your colour scheme with changing seasons or your changing mood!
See how this single rug adds punch to this simple living room?
Put the rug on the wall and it adds colour and warmth to this cozy bedroom.
Drapes are another beautiful way to add colour to your room. If they are sheer, the colour also filters through the sunlight streaming in and gives a soft coloured hue to the whole room.
These boho strip drapes are an interesting twist to regular curtains. You can play around with as much colour and texture as you like.
Colourful Accessories:
Or a miniature version of the strip drapes… make bunting with strips of cloth and ribbon to make a colourful wall hanging.
Multicoloured pennants always look bright and colourful in kids room…
… or outdoor spaces like gardens and terraces.
Lanterns are also a great way to add colour to an outdoor space.
Cushions remain the most obvious and easy way to add colour to your living room.
I also love the throw at the end of the sofa above. You can also use throws on beds. They not only add colour, but the layering makes the bed cozier and more inviting.
In fact, layering it up gives you an opportunity to add on more colour and textures. This white bench looks more inviting with the layers of throws and cushions on it.
And I think the layering on this table setting is totally mind blowing! All the prints and texutres of the fabrics layered with the colours of the flowers, fruits, crockery and glassware is sensory overload at its best!
Flowers are always and forever. When you’re using them pop colour into your room, don’t use a single coloured bunch. Add on different flowers to make your bouquet truly colourful. I love how this bunch has been put into a tray of a third colour… another way to layer it up!
Or put the bright flowers into even brighter vases… after all, we’re being inspired by holi!
