Today we have a short introduction to our Bold Blue Boy’s room from our Mid Century Modern Home. Our ‘boy’ is actually a young man who has just finished college and started working. Which goes to say that his requirements for his room are quite clear. For instance, even though we thought a single bed would fit in more comfortably, he was certain he wanted a double bed.

But, before I get to the size of the bed, let me explain the plan in detail.

The Plan

As you can see below, the room is not too large. On the right hand wall is the entrance to the bedroom through the common passage. The door at the bottom right leads into the walk-in-wardrobe and the one on the left to the bathroom. The left side has end to end glass sliding doors which lead to the balcony and give us all the lovely light that this room has.

This means, that of the 4 walls of this room, we have only a wall and a half against which we can place our furniture. Luckily for us, the separate area for a walk-in-wardrobe means that we don’t have to find wall space for the wardrobes.

The Bed Wall

Our boy wants a large writing table and a double bed for sure. Which means we had to lay them out like we have in the plan above. We have to push the bed in the corner and keep the study table at its foot.

This means we don’t have place to keep a side table. Where will he keep his watch and phone at night? Or a glass of water and the book he’s reading?

Our solution to this problem is a niche along the entire bed-cum-study wall. This will give him a handy shelf along his bed to keep all the little knick knacks required. It will also add an interesting detail to the otherwise blank wall in the room.

TV Wall

Again, if you go back to the plan, you will realise that the TV also chose its own spot in this room. There was really nowhere else we could put it.

And if you look carefully, you’ll see that wall is almost entirely a column. This means we can’t pass the TV wires and wires for its plug points and switches through that wall.

Our plan, then, is to make a plywood panel on that wall, stretching the entire width between the two doors. A niche above will fit in the television. Another niche below it will serve as another wall shelf to take care of the remotes etc.

Remember how we used wallpaper to highlight the TV panel in our blue guest room? We’ll select something suitably fabulous for this panel too.

That bed, study table and TV unit takes care of all of the furniture going into this room. Which leaves us with the finishes and colours.

The colour of choice for this room was blue, and can you really ever go wrong with that?

The niche takes care of the study-cum-bed wall. But the wall directly above the bed is yet a blank slate. We could use a big, bold piece of art to make a statement there.

Or a few smaller pieces put together perfectly, which will give it a lighter look.

A full wall of curtains makes that a great place to add in our colour and pattern. And a good rug always makes a space look nicer.

And finally, the little details like the cushions and throws, which will make our bold blue boy’s room all come together perfectly.

It’s always this last part that I find the most exciting. But a lot of hard work and detail comes in before we actually get there. We’re almost there on this project.. at selecting the furnishings. And I can’t wait to start.. or to bring you the end result once it’s all done.

A very very smart design Rittika. I am just thinking how many different designs you create with the same colour. At our place the blue spun a haveli look. Now with the same blue, a diagonally opposite contemporary room . Totally impressive !!
