Our next reveal from the Dee Residence, is this bright and fun, blue and orange boy’s room. Our client here, is a teenage boy whose favourite colour is orange.
Do you remember the time we designed my son’s room? His favourite colour was (and still is) red! I remember thinking then, that he can’t possibly have an all red room. I remember thinking the same thing about orange now.
But we’ll get to the colours later. Let’s start with the plan.
The Plan
This room already had its wardrobes and they were in good condition. The client didn’t want to redo them and I agreed. This meant there was only one long wall left to place the bed.
The study table fit beautifully into the window alcove. Since the table wasn’t big enough to include drawers below, we placed another chest of drawers behind it. This gives additional storage for books and stationery and also space for the printer.
Our teen enjoys playing the keyboard, which has been placed to one side of the bathroom door, opposite the bed.
We designed some simple open shelves for the odd corner formed on the other side of the bathroom door.
The Bed Wall
Though he didn’t need a double bed, our teen did want a bed slightly wider than the usual single size. So we had this simple one custom made, with drawers below for storage.
We decided to go with a cool and casual look in this bedroom – it does belong to a teenager, after all. I remembered this cool headboard from our post on 11 Unusual Headboard Ideas, and thought it would fit in here perfectly.
We’ve mounted a regular curtain rod in black on the wall, and hung two ‘pillows’ from it using loops on the covers.
The Study Alcove
Though the study table fit neatly into the alcove, we didn’t want to give heavy storage with it so that it doesn’t block the natural light coming in from the window. It has only a couple of open shelves to keep the basic necessities.
We thought we’d compensate for the lack of storage in the study table by giving an additional chest of drawers on just behind it. The open section right at the top of the chest of drawers is a sliding tray which holds the printer.
A place for everything, and everything in it’s place – it always makes me happy if we can get this right. And more so if it’s all tucked away neatly, out of sight!
The Bathroom Wall
Opposite the bed is the door to the bathroom. On its right we had enough space to comfortably keep his keyboard. His study chair is on wheels, with adjustable height, we decided he can use the same chair for both studying, and playing his keyboard.
On the left of the bathroom door we were left with this little, odd corner. We thought these open shelves would dress it up nicely.
The Wardrobe Wall
This wall already had these wardrobes, built end-to-end, including an overhead cabinet going over the entrance door to the bedroom. These were well built, with a simple design on the shutters which is timeless and can never go out of style.
Since we added a false ceiling to the bedroom we had to re-size the shutters of the overhead cabinet. Also, I didn’t particularly like the original polish colour. So we had that changed to match the colour we used in the rest of the home.
These beautiful, black, wooden handles were the final touch to update the old wardrobes to smart new ones that become this room.
Blue and Orange Boy’s Room
As I was saying earlier, this boy’s favourite colour is orange. And I just couldn’t imagine doing a completely orange room, especially for a boy. But I had faced a similar situation while designing my son’s room, because his favourite colour is red.
I have often said that blue can be used as a neutral which is what we did with my son’s room. Added doses of blue along with a red to tone it all down.
Similarly, I offered two choices of neutrals to our teen too. We could either go with grey and orange, or blue and orange. He chose the latter, and we began selecting finishes for our blue and orange boy’s room.
We started with this beautiful, custom made wallpaper. The deep blue on the lower half of the wall made sure that the pattern was not overwhelming. The single colour also ensured that we could once again play with patterns with our bed and headboard furnishings.
Orange is a bright, bold colour and can be very overpowering if over done. And so we made sure we used more blues than oranges in the entire space. The only orange we added to the room, other than the wallpaper, was the bedcover.
The blue and orange stripes on the blinds are subtle, while the sheer curtains are white with little orange, blue and ochre ‘dashes’ embroidered onto them. We also stuck to blue on our chest of drawers…
A few beautiful shades of blue on our bedside table…
And then some blue on a few of the open shelves. The artwork on the wall above the keyboard also reflects our colours quite well.
Having a single bed in a room means a bare floor through most of the room, which can look cold and uninviting. This beautiful rug took care of that.
It spreads a dazzling pattern across the room and brightens up the entire space.
Which gives us a blue and orange boy’s room that is just the right amount of blue, with the perfect dash of orange. It’s the precise amount of bright with a suitable quantity of cheerful and a great place for a teenager to call his own.
Before & Afters
Let’s get to the absolute best part of any reveal post.
The first thing you see as you enter the room is the window alcove.
We made this space far more efficient by placing the study table on one side and a chest of drawers for storage on the other.
The bathroom wall, opposite the bed.
We shifted the bathroom door towards the left to fit in a WC to one side inside the bathroom. (Bathroom reveals are coming soon!) This gave us a longer wall on one side where we could fit in the keyboard, and a small, lonely corner on the other, which we brightened up with open shelves.
The wardrobes were already in place.
We gave them a swanky new look by changing the polish colour and hardware.
And finally the bed wall.
Which is now the hero of this room.
