This was the first space we introduced from our White & Light Home about a year back. Over the year we’ve revealed the rest of the home, a room at a time. But somehow, we left this kitchen behind. So here we are today, finally, with our black and white kitchen reveal.
The introductory post to this kitchen was written a long time ago. So it would be a good idea to head over there first and see how we planned this space. And whether we stuck to the plan or not!
The Plan
But it’s not a bad idea to start with the plan anyways. It will give you a bearing of the layout when you see the pics.
As you can see here, the hob and sink are on one side of the kitchen while the refrigerator is on the opposite. We already had ready counters in this kitchen, and we left them as is.
Everything else, we changed.
The Backsplash
The first thing we did was to remove the pre-existing half-hearted backsplash. It was a 2 foot band of tile that ended abruptly in the middle of the wall. It neither looked nice, nor served the purpose of protecting all the walls.
This beautiful herringbone pattern from our post on Kitchen Backsplash Ideas had inspired us instantly. We looked around for other tile options too, but kept coming back to the herringbone, and eventually decided to stick with it.
And I’m so glad we did. The black grout defines the joints beautifully and I love how the pattern has so much prominence in the entire kitchen even though we’ve gone all white.
The Storage
Next came the storage. We had initially thought of going all white, but I thought that might just end up being too white. Wood grain always adds some warmth… and a little bit of warmth never hurts.
Since the counter was prefixed, our modular solution had to be made to adjust around it. Kitchen Studio did a fab job with that. All the drawers and cabinets were made as per our requirements and pre-existing counter measurements and the end result is beautiful.
Black Accents
Initially we thought of using black handles on all the white cabinets, but eventually decided to go handle-less for a smooth, clean finish. This meant that we had to use black on other accessories in the kitchen to give it the black and white finish we were looking for.
We started with our chimney and hob. The black hob merges beautifully into our black counter, so you can’t tell one from the other. The black chimney serves just the opposite purpose. It stands out against our white backsplash to make a prominent black accent in our white kitchen.
The black fridge and microwave give us our black accessories on the opposite side.
The door frame gives us our black accent on the entrance wall. And that beautiful wall planter is one of my favourite accents from our black and white kitchen reveal.
We went back and forth a lot on what to put on this wall. We thought of artwork, a small shelf, key hooks. It had to be large enough to fill the wall well, yet not hit the overhead storage shutter every time we open it.
Eventually we realised we don’t have any plants in this kitchen, and then it was a no-brainer. The black metal planter gave us another beautiful black accent and the money plant instantly got life into this kitchen. The planter is available here on our Amazon Store.
Before & After
Here are a few before and afters to wrap up our black and white kitchen reveal.
A view of the sink corner of our kitchen with the incomplete backsplash.
We removed the old tiles and used a herringbone backsplash going all the way up to the ceiling. Bright, white cabinets and a well lit counter help to make this entire space brighter.
A view of the chimney corner of the same wall.
Again, the patterned tile, the well finished storage and the black accents make all the difference!
The entrance wall, which gives us a good overall view of the kitchen.
Making that door white is one of my favourite decisions for this kitchen. I love how the black frame makes it a statement by itself.
Black And White Kitchen Reveal
And so we come to the end of our short and sweet black and white kitchen reveal. With this post, we also wrap up all the reveals from our White & Light home. Do take a look in case you have missed any.
The end of a project is sort of like turning the last page of an exciting book. You feel this slight emptiness inside. Like you’ve suddenly been shut out of the lives of all the characters that you lived and breathed with for so long. But then there is the promise of the next project that’s waiting for you to turn it’s first page. A new story with new people, spaces and challenges of its own. A new world to get entwined in and make your own for a while.

Until next time,

Is the tiles matt or glossy ??
Hi Hemalatha. The tiles are matt.
Where do we get those herringbone tiles?
They are regular rectangular white tiles laid out in a herringbone pattern.
Amazing effect of herringbone white tiles. Loved it.
Thank you! I love the herringbone too!
