You are lucky enough to have a little balcony of your own. It’s your chance to make your own little oasis in a crowded, congested city, but you don’t know where to begin. So today we have simple balcony decor ideas that will help you do just that.
Balcony Decor Ideas:
I started making a list of everything I have, can and want to put into my balcony and realised that it’s just too long a list. I would not be able to do justice to to all possible balcony decor ideas in a single post. So, in my head, I divided the balcony into 3 parts: the floor, the walls and the ceiling. And I thought it would be a great idea to dedicate one post to each of these areas. Today, let’s start with the floor.
What I’m not going to include in these posts, are plants. That is a given. Of course you are going to put plants in your balcony. But if you’re wondering about the rest, you’ve come to the right place.
The first thing you need is obviously some furniture to sit on. And my favourite kind of furniture for balconies is
(1) Cane Furniture:
Do you remember this living room – cum – balcony makeover we did for Em? All we really used to redo her balcony was some pretty cane furniture and lots of plants.
And you’ve probably seen the cane chairs in my balcony a dozen times over by now.
There is something sweet, simple and out-doorsy about cane furniture that I absolutely love. It also looks light, which is perfect for little balconies.
Cane chairs are quite easily available locally, but if you’re looking for an online source, these are a few pieces I loved!
(2) A Garden Bench:
Now if you have seen my balcony, you know where my love for bright, beautiful benches comes from.
So if you can fit one in, go for it. I like the slatted, wooden benches almost as much as the rustic wooden ones.
(3) Swing:
A swing is another great idea for a balcony. You can always do a single seater if the balcony is small.
Or a larger one to share if you have the space.
(4) Artificial Grass:
I’d love to have a little ‘lawn’ of my own, but that’s obviously not possible in most apartment balconies. An artificial grass carpet is a pretty good solution to that problem. You can lay it out end to end, or mix it up with some tiles and pebbles to make it more interesting.
You can order these grass carpet rolls in various sizes depending on your requirement.
(5) Outdoor Rug:
If the artificial grass is a bit much for you, an outdoor rug is a great option to make the balcony look warm and welcoming.
I love the range of outdoor rugs available at The Rug Republic. They are made of recycled bicycle tubes along with PET yarns obtained from recycling water bottles which make them quite tolerant to water too!
Depending on how shaded your balcony is and how much rain it gets, jute rugs are another great option for outdoor spaces.
(6) Planters:
You will, of course, need lots of plants to make that balcony of yours look amazing. Putting them in beautiful planters is a really simple way to up your balcony decor. I usually like planters in natural, rustic materials. It adds to the earthy charm of a garden. I absolutely loved the range of outdoor metal planters available at Maddhome.
Even though this one is made of fibreglass, the rough finish gives it an earthy look.
And you can never go wrong with cane planters.
(7) Baskets:
In fact, cane baskets of all shapes and sizes make great garden decor.
In my balcony I have used baskets hanging on the wall as little planters.
Cane basket options are easily available locally, but if you are looking to buy them online, I love the collection available at Crafts and Looms.
(8) Ladder Shelf:
Now that you have these loads of plants in pretty planters and baskets, where are you going to fit them all in your small balcony? If you can’t go horizontal, going vertical is a great idea.
This can be an easy DIY using an old ladder. You can use the steps as they are to place plants, or put planks of wood across to make little shelves. Else, you can pick up a ready ladder shelf for plants like the one below.
(9) Lanterns:
Once all your furniture and plants are in place, nothing like a few candles to add some romance to your balcony.
Balconies can sometimes get really breezy, and then candles in any kind of open holders go off immediately. I always prefer glass votives or lanterns, such as these, to light candles outdoors.
(10) Candle Stakes:
A great way to have the candles shimmer through your plants is to use candle stakes.
These usually hold a glass votive at the top of a long stick. You can dig the stick into the mud in any potted plant, and you’ll have candle light shimmering through your balcony garden.
.
