‘Bohemian’ is often described as free spirited and unconventional in an artistic way. To me, that means being able to express yourself, whether in terms of ideas, clothes, designs, colours or patterns, without any rules, and straight from the heart. And that, I think, is the reason that ‘boho’ is such a rage all over. I love the boho style of design myself and the exciting possibilities it offers in terms of being able to mix and match different design elements whichever way I please. And so today, this post on beautiful boho wall decor ideas, for those of you who love the boho style but don’t know where to begin!
Boho Wall Decor Ideas
I first thought of writing a single post on how to make any space look boho. When I started researching the article I realised there are so many possibilities of making a space boho in so many different ways areas, that I wouldn’t be doing justice to the boho style if I tried to summarise it in one post.
And so I’ve broken it down into pieces. Today we’ll start with boho wall decor ideas. Walls are the largest surface area in any space, and can be used as the primary way to define its style. So let’s go boho with the walls.
(1) Colours That Sing To Your Heart
Remember what we said about boho being unconventional and free spirited. So start following your heart right here. What is your favourite colour? That beautiful peachy pink you’ve loved forever? (And no, it doesn’t say men can’t have a pink room!)
Forget the rule that says walls should be light to reflect light in the room. Even the rule that says dark colours make a room look smaller.
Bright colours are not ‘too much’.
And the shocking purple is not going to shock anyone.
Follow your heart and go for what you want, and truly make your space your own.
(2) Natural Textures
The boho design style takes a lot of inspiration from nature around us… I guess that’s because it isn’t about perfection, but going with the flow. Whether it’s a brick wall left completely unfinished.
Or given a coat of paint in white.. or whatever your favourite colour is,
Or a paint finish that is left unfinished, unpolished and natural, textured wall finishes add a great boho touch to your room.
(3) Pretty Patterns
To me, the most exciting part of going boho is using a whole lot of patterns all together. And what better place to start using patterns than the walls. So whether it’s using a light self pattern, which makes a great background to play with colours..
Or a dark one which makes a statement by itself..
Or any pretty colour that goes with your theme, patterns are a great way to go boho.

Since the bohemian style is very inspired by nature, using designs influenced by nature is a great idea too.
And the best way to get the pattern on the wall? Using wallpapers or painting with wall stencils are the easiest options.
(4) Gallery Walls
Once we’ve decided how we want to finish the wall surface, we can pick from various boho wall decor ideas to decide what goes on the wall.
Gallery walls always look fabulous, but how would a gallery wall be different for a boho styled room? I would again keep in mind free spirited and eclectic. No particular theme or rule for your gallery wall, but a mix of all things that are important to you.
If it’s only artwork and frames you want to use, I’d use frames in different shapes, sizes, colours and do the same with my artwork.
But you don’t have to stick to frames at all. See how artwork here is mixed with cane baskets, wood carvings, brass plates and even a plant. This eclectic mix is what gives it the bohemian touch.
Use things you’ve got on your travels from various parts of the world.. you’ll automatically get an eclectic mix on your wall to make it look boho.
(5) Cane Baskets
You saw above how cane baskets make a gallery wall look beautifully boho. So much so, that you could go with JUST cane baskets to make your boho gallery wall.
Here it’s not necessarily the mix of colours, but the mix of patterns too that help make it look exciting.
Of course, that’s not to say that you can’t mix colours on a basket wall.
Colourful baskets always look pretty too!
(6) Cane Accents
In fact, why just baskets? Since cane falls in the natural materials category, most cane accents add a bohemian touch.
You could use a jute runner or rug on the wall.
Or even push a screen against the wall to make a backdrop to your sofa or bed.
(7) Traditional Tapestry
Using beautiful fabric prints or embroideries is another great boho wall decor idea. Designs that symbolise nature or spirituality, like mandalas and hamsas, go very well with a bohemian theme.
Traditional embroideries like suzanis which focus a lot on animal, flower and spiritual motifs are again a safe bet.
If you can introduce pretty shapes along with pretty colours, it only makes it all more beautiful.
(8) Magical Macrame
I think macrame works for the same reason that cane does. It’s a natural fibre that is twisted, tied and knotted to form beautiful designs that add not only pattern but also texture to the wall. You could use a piece with a mix of fibres to add more interest.
Or dye the threads in various colours or ombre shades.
Or use a simpler version with tassels and pom poms in various colours and sizes.
(9) Plants.. always!
How can we even begin to speak about natural and free spirited without including plants in our decor? Whether you drop them down from a shelf on the wall..
Or climb vines up along it, plants always add good boho vibes.
Use macrame holders to hang your little planters if you want them in smaller doses!
Or do the same thing with pretty flowers to add more colour.
