In our third and last post of the series, today we have some really pretty balcony ceiling ideas. I always feel that there is something extremely dreamy and fairy tale like about hanging up decor. Whether it’s lights, fabrics, flowers or plants, the minute you hang them they up the romantic quotient of the space. In this post on balcony ceiling ideas, we’re going to make the most of this theory and see how we can use our balcony ceilings to their optimum.
Balcony Ceiling Ideas:
So if we have to hang things from the ceiling, the important question is what should we hang? In this post we’ve got 7 simple ideas for you.
(1) Hang Plants:
It can’t get simpler than that… and it can’t get prettier. This is especially helpful in teeny-tiny balconies where either you or a potted plant can fit in. If you can’t add your greens on to the floor, simply hang them from above.
The next question would be how to hang the plants. While simple hooks will do just fine, you could try these various looks to make your balcony ceiling look even prettier. Use rafters on the ceiling to hang your plants.
These wooden logs give a natural and rustic look to the space.
While this is a custom made ladder, you could hang a regular wooden ladder using hooks and then hang plants off its steps.
I’ve used a wrought iron grid on the ceiling of my balcony to hang plants and lights. I wanted an easy way to be able to shuffle around lights and plants as and when I felt like it. This grid works perfectly.
I loved these pretty hanging baskets at Earth Garden that come with coco liners to make planting that much easier.
(2) Hang Lights:
Another thing that always has me swooning is a sprinkling of hanging lights. Whether it is bare bulbs on strings…
… or lanterns made of paper…
or cane, hanging lights in clusters have a magic of their own.
I’ve used a cluster of Moroccan lanterns to add charm to my balcony.
(3) Hang Pretty Drapes:
Drapes don’t necessarily have to be used only inside your home. They look really pretty in outdoor spaces too. Whether you use plain whites…
… or bright colours, flowing drapes look fabulous. I would use light, simple sheer fabric which is easy to machine wash regularly since it will definitely catch a lot of dust on the outside. If your balcony gets direct sunlight at any point in the day, drapes have the added advantage softening the light so you can use the balcony at any time of the day.
(4) Hang a Swing:
Do you know anyone who wouldn’t want to gently sway on a swing while reading a book, listening to music or sharing a cup of tea with a friend? A swing is always a winner. If you’re lucky enough to have a large space, go for a big one that can also work as a day bed.
If you have a smaller balcony, you could do one of these single chair swings.
Or even these teeny-tiny garden swings to add a bit of whimsy… and a little swing to swing on!
Here are a couple of swings of different size available online.
(5) Wind Chimes and Bells:
Bells and chimes are another add on which can always take you to fantasy land.. not just because of how pretty they look but also by their sound.
These beaded bells add a boho touch…
… while these brass bells have an old world charm.
Make sure you also like the sound of your chime when you choose one. While a soft tinkling can be sweet and soothing, an unpleasant sound can be extremely annoying.
There are loads of pretty chimes available online. I loved the collection available at Exclusive Lane.
(6) Bird Feeders:
There are so many simple DIYs you’ll find online to make your own bird feeder, and so many readily available feeders that you can click and buy.
I love this cage that has been converted into a bird feeder by placing a water dish in it and strewing grain on its floor.
A beauty like this one is amazing piece of decor on its own.
This is something I’ve been struggling with for a while. I really, really want to get a couple of pretty bird feeders for my balcony. I’d love to have chirping little sparrows and parrots flying in and out all day, but I’m afraid of the pigeons that will most likely come along with them. Does anyone know a surefire way to keep pigeons away? Please put it in the comments below. I’m sure a lot of us will be very grateful for that bit of information.
If you are looking to buy bird feeders online, here are some pretty options.
(7) Get Innovative!
The last of our balcony ceiling ideas is the most open ended one. You can hang just about anything that can be hung and most likely, it will look pretty. Seriously. I mean it. Do you remember the time I hung an umbrella a friend gifted me?

These simple tips are really simple. I have used all these tips. This is especially helpful in teeny-tiny balconies where either you or a potted plant can fit in. If you can’t add your greens on to the floor, simply hang them from above.
So true.. I also think that hanging plants have their own charm which cannot be matched by potted plants!
