Up next, are the two boys’ bedrooms from our Mid Century Modern Home . I will walk you through the wood and white boy’s room reveal today. We’ll wrap up this home with the second boy’s bedroom next time.
The Plan
Let me quickly show you the plan one more time before we begin. I have discussed it in detail in the intro post to this room here.
The bed and side tables go along one wall.
The wall opposite has two doors – one that leads to the bathroom and the other to the closet. We used the strip of wall between the two doors to house the television.
The clients wanted the study table to face in this particular direction as requested by their vastu consultant. Which meant the study table went right in front of the sliding doors leading into the balcony.
We thought this was a good idea after all. Since there aren’t too many usable walls in this room, placing the table in front of the glass wall added to our functional space. Also, who can complain of a study corner that has a great view and loads of natural light?
The Bed Wall
We knew we wanted an end to end headboard on this wall. Breaking up the narrow wall into smaller sections with the headboard and side tables didn’t seem like such a good idea. We thought a full length headboard with integrated side tables would give a cleaner look.
The TV Wall
The television obviously needs to go opposite the bed. Thanks to the two doors you can see there, we barely had place to put the TV.
You can see the walk in closet through the open door. The door to the left leads into the bathroom. The wall between these two is a column, which meant we couldn’t pass the television wires through it.
What we did instead was to panel the wall in plywood. This allowed us to make the niches for the TV above and the shelf like niche for the sound bar, remote etc. below. The TV fits neatly, flush in to this niche.
Also, all the wires easily pass behind that panel and are conveniently concealed.
The Study Wall
As we discussed earlier, the study table went in front of the sliding windows to the balcony, facing outwards. We’ve left enough space for the curtains to fall behind it and there is enough space to the right to open the sliding doors and enter the balcony.
The large column sticking out between the study table and the bed was a real eyesore, though. We used these winding shelves to make the column itself less prominent, and they are my favourite feature of this wood and white boy’s room reveal.
The varying heights of the shelves also helped us to regularise the different lines we had in the corner with the differing heights of the side table, study table and headboard.
Notice how the shelf starts as a continuation of the study table and then takes it’s first turn at headboard height. And all the irregular heights suddenly start to look like that’s just the way they are meant to be.
Wood and White Boy’s Room Reveal
Our ‘boys’ are young men who have recently completed their education and are beginning their careers. Though we were looking to design young, fresh spaces for them, we most definitely didn’t want the spaces to look childlike.
Wood and white can be used in many ways, from traditional to trendy. We knew we’d be able to use it to give a crisp feel to this space, yet keep the mid century vibe of the rest of the home.
Our first selection for this room was that stunning veneer with the rich, beautiful, grain running along it’s length. It would be too heavy for the full room, though. So this one went only on the headboard and side table drawers. We selected a milder veneer for the rest of the room.
The side table tops went grey to break the monotony of all that wood.
The client wanted to add a pop of colour with some yellow. I thought a bright yellow might end up looking childlike and we went with shades of mustard and gold instead.
We first started with that beautiful wallpaper. The hints of gold there were just the kind of light touch of colour we were looking for.
This elegant grey and gold rug, with the slightest hint of design coming through, was a perfect addition.
Rich, mustard stripes on that cozy throw were added a hint of colour to the all grey bedding. And the bold, beautiful, black and gold abstract art, finally sealed the deal.
Before and Afters
We’ll end the walk through of our lovely wood and white boy’s room reveal with a few before and afters.
The entrance wall and door to the bedroom.
A good door frame is one of those small, easy to ignore, elements that make a huge difference to a room interior.
The not-so-big bed wall with the large column to it’s right.
The bed and side tables are all incorporated into the long, wall-to-wall headboard which makes the focal point of this room.
The window wall with full length sliding doors stepping out into the balcony.
The study table went in front of the sliding doors helping us make some additional space in this room.
And finally the TV wall..
A plywood panel between the two doors housed our TV and all the wiring that goes behind it.
That is all from our wood and white boy’s room reveal. Very often, when you put in a lot of special features into one little space, it starts to look cluttered and clumsy. In this room, I think all the separate pieces fit in beautifully with each other to make one handsome whole. That is what is most special to me about this space.
What is your favourite feature of this room? What is the one thing you’d love to do yourself, or see me repeat again in another room? Write in your thoughts and comments below.
The last bedroom space from this lovely mid century modern home will be next up on the blog. Remember to sign up here so you don’t miss them.
Until next time,
