We’re happy to introduce the next space from our Mid Century Modern Home today, the Wood and White Boy’s Room. This bedroom too, will belong to a ‘boy’ who is actually a young man almost at the end of college. So while we want the room to look young, it’s definitely not for a child.
Wood And White Boy’s Room
This room is almost a mirror image of the bold blue boy’s room we introduced last time. You would think an almost identical room for boys of almost the same age, having almost the same requirements would almost look the same. But it doesn’t.
While we have got one element in common in both the bedrooms, this room looks quite different from the other one. Let me show you how.
The Plan:
Just like the other boy’s room, this one too has only one plain wall which is perfect to fit in the bed and side tables. The wall opposite has two doors, leading to the bathroom and the walk-in wardrobe.
The wall facing the entrance has full length sliding doors that lead into the balcony.
Let me walk you through this room one wall at a time to show you how we planned it.
The Bed Wall:
While we fit the bed into the corner in the other room, this boy was certain he didn’t want a corner bed. The biggest difference between the two rooms is the large column you can see at the end of the bed wall, along the sliding doors. The column actually makes a little niche into which our side table fits in well. So this side of the room was easy to plan.
Since the bed and side table are taking up that entire wall, we thought we’d extend the headboard from end to end to envelope the whole space neatly. What this most helps to do is have a single neat line running across the wall instead of different heights of the headboard and side tables creating multiple lines.

The client absolutely loved this image of the beautiful veneer running across the length of this headboard, and wanted something similar for this bedroom. We so love this too, and so designed this room around this inspiration image.
The TV Wall:
The TV wall is identical to the one we had in the blue boy’s room. It’s a narrow strip of wall between the bathroom and walk-in-wardrobe doors.
We don’t have enough space at the foot of the bed to keep a unit below the television here. Also, since this wall is a column, we need to run a panel in front of it to hide all the wiring. So, just like in the other boy’s room, we decided to go with the vertical panel like the one below.

Only we’ll have two niches in it. One to house the television, and the other, a slim open niche, to house the sound bar, remotes etc.
The Study Table:
We had two options to position the study table. The first was to the left of the bed, in place of the side table. This didn’t suit the clients due to vastu.
The only option left then, was to place it in front of the balcony doors. This seemed like a good option to us for many reasons.
Firstly, is there anything better than working in natural light? Secondly, a seat with a view is so much better than facing a dead wall.
And finally, because every inspiration image we saw was prettier than the last, and reaffirmed that we were on the right track!
The Book Shelf:
This left the awkward column in the corner, between the bed and the study table. Since we couldn’t have any book shelves or storage above our study table (considering it’s in front of a window) we thought we’d use the column to give our young man some shelf space.
We also thought that if we wrap the shelves along both sides of the column, it will help tie in the two sides and make the spaces flow into one another. Sort of like this pic below.
So the shelf will run along the bed side to the study side… and back and forth along that column. This should make our little corner quite interesting, I think.
Colours & Finishes:
Which brings us to the colour selection of this wood and white boy’s room. Between the long headboard, the book shelf and study table and the many doors to this room, we already have a lot of wood in here.
If you scroll up to the headboard inspiration pic, you’ll see that the side table is grey. The client wanted to go with that, and so we considered using greys in this bedroom as a great neutral to go with the wood tones.
We could do this with a light grey finish like in the pic above, or a much darker, more dramatic grey, like in the pic below.
But considering the room isn’t too large, I thought adding a grey wall would only make the room look dark and heavy. I thought white was the best way to go with all the warm wood.
And then we could use greys, blacks and neutrals in furnishings and decor accents to get in some colour.
We have a lot of different elements in this wood and white boy’s room and I think they’ll all fall into place beautifully to make a pretty picture. I can’t wait to see the end result myself.. and share it with you here on the blog.
