We’re finally here with our teen bedroom reveal from our Modern Vintage Home. This room belongs to two teens, a girl and a boy. It is one of those spaces where we had to revamp the entire room without changing most of the furniture. And working on a space like that is both exciting and difficult. Rather, it’s exciting because it is difficult.
Teen Bedroom Reveal
The room already had a bed and wardrobe, and the client didn’t want to redo those. In fact, this room had a whole lot of built in furniture all of which, all together, made the room look very dark and heavy. Click here to read the intro post and see all the before pics.
Our aim was to make the room look lighter, brighter and younger. This, with only very minimal changes in furniture.
How do you change it all without changing anything? Today, in our teen bedroom reveal, we’ll show you what we did…
The Plan:
Here’s the plan which we discussed in greater detail in our introduction to this teen bedroom.
The room already had a day bed which opens out into a double bed. On the opposite side is an entire wall of wardrobes. This we had to leave as is.
There was a lose study table on the study wall along with a whole lot of open storage in the room. This we organised on to one side to make the room look neater, and therefore lighter.
The Bed Wall
Behind the bed was a whole lot of disorganised storage. A wall full of cubbies which ended up looking less decorative and more messy because it was being used as storage shelves for a whole lot of little things.
We removed all of it to give a simple, clean first look as you enter the room.
We put a full length mirror in the far corner near the bed along with a pendant light above. This helped add volume to the room and brighten up this dark corner. It also serves perfectly as a dressing area.
The headboard, and the entire bed, was previously finished in a dark polish. We used white laminate on the bed to make it lighter. Next, we added some cushioning to the headboard to make it comfortable, and used custom fabric print to add some bold pattern.
We automatically drifted towards blues in the room, to go with the beautiful blue patterned flooring this room has. But we didn’t want to go completely vintage with the look because, after all, it is a teen bedroom.
In my head, I could also imagine this floor in an old Goan villa. And so we decided to go with beach-vibes instead. These art prints brightened up our walls and added to the beachy vibes.
The Wardrobe Wall
This wall has the wardrobe from end to end and we weren’t removing that. Which meant there wasn’t much we could do with this. All we did here was change the dark polish to white paint. We also swapped out the steel handles for black ones and the wardrobes went from looking heavy and vintage to light and chic in no time.
The Study Wall
So this, primarily, was the wall we could use to plan as we please.
It was a similar story with the lose study table they had here. It was a smallish table with a whole lot of open shelves. Which meant that unless you line up your books and paraphernalia very neatly on them, they tend to look messy. As a mother of two teenage kids, I know it’s extremely unrealistic to expect two teen kids to do that on a regular basis.
So what we did instead, was to give more organised and closed storage. Drawers help to separate and compartmentalise all the knick knacks. And shutters help to literally keep all the mess behind closed doors!
The newsprint wallpaper added teen vibes to the space without being overbearing. We mixed up old and new artwork here along with a clock to add a pop of colour to this space.
And that wrapped up our teen bedroom makeover.
Here are a few before and afters so you can see all the changes that I have spoken about above.
Before & After
This was the bed wall, with all the cubbies there not really helping much. There are only that many frames a teenager needs to display. After that the books and toys ended up looking more messy than decorative.
With all the cubbies gone and the bed made white this space suddenly looks a few tons lighter.
The window wall, with a whole lot of useful storage drawers tucked in below the window.
We only repainted them white and added black handles too make them look more chic.
The wardrobe wall with these beautiful louvered shutters across the entire length.
The dark polish though, made them look just to heavy for this little room. Again, all we did was just paint them white. They look more stylish, much lighter and are perfect for our beach cottage vibes.
And finally our study table wall which looked very cluttered with all the open shelves and unplanned artwork on the wall.
We organised all the storage neatly behind closed shutters. The simple, straight lines helped to clean up the look.
A place for everything and everything in its place… this itself goes a long way in making any space look lighter, brighter and more beautiful.
What we’ve tried to do here is remove all the areas where our teens could scatter all their belongings and give them more closed, organised space in which to store it all out of sight. I hope it helps them to keep the room looking clean and bright!

That wraps up our teen bedroom reveal. But there are more transformations, along the same lines, coming to you from our Modern Vintage Home. The home has been designed previously, and well designed at that. But it was done many years ago and for a different set of owners.
Our job here is to make this home now a home for our clients, and do that without unnecessarily undoing what’s good in the design.
It’s always a challenge to work on such projects and it’s obviously easier to start with a blank slate. But I’m enjoying the ride so far and can’t wait to bring you the other spaces soon. So remember to sign up here to make sure you don’t miss any of it.
Until next time,
Hi Ritika, I try to follow you on your every post. Excellent suggestions. Would like to know where we can pick up the variety of wall pictures and artifacts you use in your model?
I am based in Gurgaon.
All the very best to you!
Thanks Arti. Sources of the artwork are in the ‘Get The Look’ section of this post.
Beautiful changes.
Thank you! 🙂
Is the bed extendable.
Yes.. it’s the same bed as in the ‘before’ pic. It was open in at that time, and is closed in our pics here.
Unbelievable !! We are living in this home yet the transformation is unbelievable ! That some one can have such a vision to transform…that in itself is unbelievable. Can’t thank you enough Rittika.
Note: Sorry for all the times we objected to your fuss for details. That such minutest of minute details can matter to someone, that in itself is unbelieavable.
Haha! It’s all part of the fun.. and I had great fun doing up this room. Thanks for having me on board, Rashi!
