A few weeks back I showed you the plan for S & Y’s bedroom. They are a young couple who recently moved into their first ‘own’ home. They were really excited about doing it up, and the 2 briefs I got for the room were ‘lots of storage’ and ‘light colours’. I was more than happy to go along with that, because ‘lots of storage’ means a whole lot of woodwork. And ‘light colours’ helps to keep the room looking light even with all that heavy storage. Well, the room is ready and so today I proudly bring to you S & Y’s neutral bedroom reveal!
Neutral Bedroom Reveal:
I’ll start with a recap of the plan for those of you who missed the introductory post for this bedroom.
First comes the ‘lots of storage’ and we’ve planned for storage wherever possible. We have wardrobes on 1 wall with the overhead storage going from end to end on top. We have storage under the bed. And we have tall mirror panels on either side of the bed with storage behind them too.
We have given some storage in the TV unit too, though that isn’t too deep and will fit in their little things. Remember the offset in that wall which we had to straighten out to fit the TV in? I’ll show you how we did that too. So let’s get to the details of our neutral bedroom reveal.
The Wardrobes:
As you can see, that one wall is almost entirely wardrobe. And yet it doesn’t look too heavy because of the all-white look. The wooden band in the centre helps to add a little warmth, and keep the wardrobe from getting dirty around the handles. Else you can be sure that the area around the handles would have turned grey in just a few days.
The Mirror Panels:
Those mirror panels serve many purposes in this room.
(1) They provide the perfect dressing area for the young couple. They are placed above the side tables, which can then conveniently double up as a dressing table.
(2) It’s a small room, full of furniture all around. These mirrors help to add depth and make it look much larger and so much more open.
(3) Instead of putting them directly on the wall, we’ve added storage behind them. The top part of the panel, near the ceiling, is fixed. The bottom part, below the lights, is an openable shutter which cleverly provides so much storage behind it.
(4) The 2 storages on either side make a cozy little niche which snugly fits in the bed.
The TV Unit:
See that offset on the TV wall in the pic below? It was in a really awkward position. It cut the wall almost exactly in half, so that we couldn’t fit the TV on either side, so we had to straighten that wall out. I really didn’t want to fill in that entire section, because I didn’t see any sense in making an already small room smaller. So instead we planned that slim panel running from right to left. It again helped in more than one way.
(1) We fit the TV comfortably on it.
(2) All the wires went through the gap between the panel and the wall, straight from the TV to the set-top box and plug points in the open shelf below.
(3) It gave us a slot to put in our LED strips and add some soft lights to this corner of the room.
I pulled the shelf above it partly into the offset too, to make the offset a part of the unit. On the right side, the depth of the shelf is just over 6″, but it is enough to add some curios to personalise the room. Also, since there is no floor space for a plant here, we suspended one from the ceiling in that gorgeous macrame holder.
The Finishes:
With the large amount of storage and the mostly all white look I had 2 things in mind while selecting finishes. One was to soften the look, and the second to keep it interesting.
Huge solid pieces of furniture can be very harsh and heavy. So in the decor, we tried to use little things, to balance out the big ones. For example, using a cluster of little lights in front of the mirrors, instead of 1 large fitting on either side. Or using 3 smaller pieces of art above the bed instead of 1 large piece. Smaller pieces look more delicate and they are easier on the eye when viewed from a shorter distance, as is the case in small rooms.
The second thing we did was to use lots of patterns. Again, a smaller pattern repeated again and again, is like breaking down a big thing into little pieces. For example, the wallpaper. Do you remember helping me choose this one on Instagram? (Click here to join me in all the decor action on Instagram)
Most of you chose this wallpaper and so we went with it… and I’m so glad we did! It helps break down that huge chunk of wall behind the bed with its pattern. The damask pattern on the curtains does the same for the balcony wall, which runs across the entire length of the room. And the different pattern keep the all white from getting boring.

Until next time,
Hi Ritika. Awesome makeover. I would like to know one thing though. How did we hide the curtain rods in the ‘The balcony side of the bedroom’ picture? Looks like some sort of palmet on which the AC is also mounted. What exactly is it?
Thank you Navya. Yes, that is a plywood pelmet that hides all the AC piping and the curtain channels.
You are an inspiration dear.. Your eye on detailing always mesmerise me. Awesome job
Thanks so much Shaniya!
Oh the transformation is mind-blowing!

Thanks so much Mohini. Please email me on rittika@sh057.global.temp.domains.
Very very neat transformstion Rittika. My favourite idea was of two chandeliers instead of one, right in front of the glass cabinets.
You seem to have achieved the two targets of storage n light colour very well.
Proud of you.
Thank you Rashi! 🙂 🙂 So glad you liked it!
Very interesting makeover. liked your treatment of offset in the wall and the mirrors on either side to expand the space.
Suggest that u include room dimensions also in future. Am not sure if I liked the wooden band in bw. Looks disjointed and somewhat over the top
Loved the hanging lights. How much did they cost? Also couldn’t you hv extended the storage upto the floor on the TV side?
Nice one overall. Enjoyed it narrative as well.
Thanks so much, Rajee. Yes, will include the dimensions next time. This room is 13.5 ft x 10 ft. We shopped a whole lot of lights and handles that day, so don’t remember the cost of the lights. There isn’t much space between the bed and the TV… would have really cramped up that area, so kept it the TV unit floating. Good to see you around here and thanks for the feedback.. have a great day! 🙂
