Our moody teen bedroom reveal from Krishna’s Scandinavian Home is here today. This room has turned out just as grey and moody as we expected it too. And what I truly love about it is that with all the grey and moody in it, it is anything but ‘dark’ and somber. With lights, colour and pattern giving it enough drama and a burst of life, this moody teen bedroom is just the opposite.
Moody Teen Bedroom Reveal
We had shared the plan in detail in the introductory post here. I had told you in that post how V was very clear about what he wanted in his room. His vision pretty much guided us through this makeover.
For a quick recap, you can see the final plan below. With the three available walls taking up each of the three main functions of this room, it is as straightforward as it can get.
The entrance wall takes care of storage with the wardrobes. The wall to its right takes care of working space with the study table. The wall opposite takes care of the resting space with the bed.
The fourth wall has full length glass doors leading into the balcony.
Here today, I’m going to show you how those blocks drawn on paper actually turned out.
The Study Table
Since this table takes up almost an entire wall in a not-so-large room, we wanted to make sure it isn’t too heavy. V wanted a long table, but not necessarily too much storage. So even though we gave him the length, we didn’t make the table heavy.
Firstly, as you can see, the table isn’t too deep. The depth is enough to be able to work on a tablet or laptop. The length will give V enough space to keep books, papers etc alongside while he is working.
Next, we didn’t go too heavy on the overhead storage either. A single row of shelves, as slim and sleek as the table below keeps this unit looking light. One set of drawers on the left and one closed section of the overhead takes care of most of the storage.
One of the things V had asked for was enough space on his table to be able to pull a second chair so that he can study / game with a friend. The open length on the right gives him enough place for that.
And as the straight length of the table crosses over the offset made by the column, it visually helps to straighten out that wall.
I always love how wood adds warmth to any colour, including a dark, dull grey. Little black accents, with the drawer knobs, the tray and pen holder and that beautiful chair add to our study unit’s personality.
Finally, LED strips concealed into the overhead add to the style quotient while actually helping to light up the table top while V works.
The trendy and teeny-yet-sophisticated vibe of this study area is just what we were aiming towards. And I am quite thrilled with how it turned out.
The Wardrobe
In our introductory post I had shared a pic of the wardrobe that inspired our design of this one. I was hesitant to go with a full grey wardrobe across a whole wall. It was going right next to another full grey wall and I didn’t want the room looking dull.
We thought these wooden handles would give us just the right hint of warmth. It keeps the wardrobe all grey like V wanted it, yet those wooden handles make all the difference.
It also aligns the wardrobe with the grey-and-wood look that we’ve used across the rest of the room.
The Bed Wall
Which brings us to the most dramatic part of our moody teen bedroom reveal, the bed wall. The large grained cement textured wallpaper turned out even more striking than we expected it to. A track light with spots focusing on the gallery wall sensationalizes the texture further.
V already had most of these posters and wall plates. I love how red seems to be a common colour binding them all without planning it that way. A sketch that V made himself gives it a personal touch. And he can always add more of them and grow his gallery wall as and when he pleases.
A wooden bed placed against this wall with some pattern added through cushions and a quilt helps complete the look.
Before & After
And now to my favourite part.. let me show you a few before & afters so you can see the thrilling transformation.
The wardrobe wall with the temporary storage arrangement..
… which we fitted out with smart grey wardrobes with sleek wooden handles.
The blank study wall…
Which is now an idyllic place to work with a pleasant view of the world.
And the simple bed wall…
… which is now our focal point with the striking gallery on the dramatic wallpaper.
Get The Look
When we design a space in a single colour, we try to use a whole lot of texture and pattern to make it interesting. As you must have noticed by now, that’s what we’ve done in our moody teen bedroom reveal too.
Here are some of the products we used to achieve the look.
| – 1 – Doors poster | – 2 – Cement textured wallpaper | – 3 – Pink Floyd poster | – 4 – Artificial potted succulents | – 5 – Grey cushion cover | – 6 – Grey striped bedsheet | – 7 – Pink planter | – 8 – Grey abstract comforter | – 9 – Tribe rug | – 10 – Bella chair |
.
That wraps up our moody teen bedroom reveal. Our brief of a grey, moody room could easily have become dull and gloomy. Instead we managed to make it exciting and edgy, and that’s what I love most about it.
I’d love to hear what you think about it too. So do share your favourite part of this makeover in the comments below. You can also see the rest of this home here.
Until next time,
