It’s almost Christmas already, and along with Santa Claus and a Christmas tree, the most exciting thing about Christmas is giving and getting gifts. Which is why, I think this is the perfect time for a post on newspaper gift wrapping ideas.
A whole lot of gifts usually means a load of gift wrapping paper to be used and thrown over one evening. We do want our Christmas gifts to look the prettiest ever, so we don’t think too much about it. The cost of the paper is only a small addition to our budget for gifts, and recycle – reuse and the environment can be forgotten for just one evening.
But what if we could get our gift wrapping to look really pretty without ignoring the environment? What if we could up-cycle and still have the best looking gifts ever? That would truly be a merry Christmas, I think. So today we have here on the blog,
25 Newspaper Gift Wrapping Ideas
Though these ideas are just perfect for Christmas, they would work for all occasions throughout the year. Change your colours and adornments and you could use these ideas to wrap gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and other festivals too. So remember to bookmark this post and use it whenever you are gifting. It’s just another small way for each of us to do our bit for the environment.
(1) Just a Little Twine
Yes, that’s all you really need! Who would think a gift wrapped in newspaper and twine could look this pretty. A little tag to go along, which can say ‘Happy Birthday’ as much as ‘Merry Christmas’, and you have a very easily and beautifully wrapped gift! You can find twine at your local craft store, or get some online in various colours here.
(2) Add Some Berries
It’s such a simple thing to do, and even just a couple of Christmas berries add the colour and festive vibes to the simple newspaper gift wrapping. You can buy decorative berries online here.
(3) A Sprig of Dried Flowers
A simple stem of dried flowers is subtle and stylish. Or you could add a fresh flower just before you give your gift.
(4) Coloured Twine
Use coloured twine, or wool or embroidery thread to add any colour you like. The red twine here, along with the sprig of green says ‘Christmas’ loud and clear.
(5) Gift Tags
A striking gift tag, even with the simplest gift wrap, makes the gift look so special.
(6) Name Tags
Hand made or computer printed name tags personalise the gifts and are very helpful when you have a whole bunch of gifts under your tree… or a whole lot of birthday return gifts to give away.
(7) Ribbons
Ribbons are always festive and celebratory and perk up any type of gift wrapping.
(8) Tie a Large Bow
Use thin ribbons or big wide ones, in as many colours as you like to make it all look merry. Add bows to make it more dressy.
(9) Ribbon & Twine
Mix up the two, a bright piece of ribbon with a delicate piece of twine. You can do this in various colour or pattern combinations to make every package look different.
(10) Patterned Ribbon
Use ribbons of different prints, patterns and shapes so that all your gifts don’t look the same. Keep the colour scheme the same to yet make them look like they belong together.
(11) Go Gold!
White and gold always looks plush and is great for formal occasions like anniversaries.
(12) Go Monochrome
Black and white checks on black and white print.. how classy does this look!
(13) Add Polka Dots
Such a cute idea for birthdays and fun parties. And so many different ways to do this. Cut little hearts instead of polka dots for Valentine’s day, X-mas trees for Christmas or diamonds, hearts, clubs and spades for a casino themed party!
(14) Monogram The Gifts
Love the green and black theme going across these gifts here. And the bold black monogram is stunning!
(15) Jute Lace
Jute adds a natural rusticity that goes so well with newspapers and is a great way to make your gift wraps stylish and understated. You can buy some very pretty jute lace here.
(16) Gold Tissue
Gold or silver tissue is another great way to make stylish, understated gift wraps, which are glamorous instead of rustic. I love how the gold tissue has been combined with the silver snow flakes here to add just the right amount of glitz.
(17) Paper Bows
You get all sorts of ready made adornments that you can simply stick on to your newspaper gift wrapping to make it look more dressy.
(18) Make the Bows Yourself!
Go truly green. Use newspaper itself, or other waste wrapping paper or bits of ribbon, to make your own paper bow and help serve the environment even better. It looks great too!
(19) Beads
Use alphabet beads that spell out the season or the recipient’s name… or simply beads of different shapes and colour to make the newspaper gift wrapping look pretty.
(20) Simple Adornments
These simple feathers cut out in paper with their ends dipped in gold. Such an easy DIY that makes these gifts look so glam. If you have a theme to the party you’re attending, find a suitable adornment to add on to the gift wrapping.

This woven mat made of strips of paper ribbon is another simple and beautiful way to adorn a simple newspaper gift wrapping. You can do this in any colour scheme and a zillion different colour combinations using as little as four ribbons, two in each direction.
(22) Calligraphy
You don’t have time? Forget all the ribbon and all the other baubles. Simply take a sketch pen and write in your recipient’s name. Use stickers, washi tape or stencils to paint in a simple pattern.
(23) Paper Bags
Sometimes, with smaller goodies, it’s easier to put them in a bag than wrap them up individually. In that case, use newspaper to make these simple DIY bags. I love how the paper doilies and ribbon make them look so charming!
(24) Sketch!
If you’re good with a pen, see how stunning these pen drawings look. You could draw easy geometric patterns, paisleys or mandalas… the list is endless.
