We’re exploring burgundy decor today, inspired by ‘Awakening’, Asian Paints Colour of the Year 2019. It’s a beautiful reddish – brownish – purple described as being ‘alive with the dynamism of being woke. The dignity and power of purple fused with the humility of brown, it personifies the strength to stand up when it matters.’
What I really like about it is this. That while the hint of purple gives it passion and zing, the brown gives it an earthy, neutral tone which makes it easy to use without being overwhelming.
Burgundy Decor:
What I like most about writing ‘Colour of the Year‘ posts is that each one makes me look at a particular colour in a new way. I have never given serious thought to using burgundy decor before. I might use an odd accent here or there, but that would have been more by chance rather than by the conscious intent of using it.
With Asian Paints announcing ‘Awakening’ as their colour of the year, I looked up many images of burgundy decor, found so many that I liked and a few that I didn’t. I know in my head now, how I would use this colour if I had the chance, and how I would not. Let me share some of this with you.
All Burgandy Decor:
This is the first pic that caught my eye when I started searching ‘burgundy decor’ on Pinterest. Loved the deep colour on the walls and how the bit of light coming in through the window makes it look like so many different shades. I also loved the black and white patterned floor with it.. the colours adding the neutral while the pattern makes sure the effect is not to tone down the shade, but make it look richer.
Then I found this library, the burgundy teamed up with black, grey and gold. The feel here is opulent and moody.
And then this one. Here again, the burgundy is teamed up with dark colours… the browns, greys and a little surprise with that deep green.
I loved the pics in the beginning. But you know how on Pinterest when you click on one pic, the page shows you others like it? I was seeing pages and pages of deep, dark, moody rooms and after a while it got too much.
I realised I wouldn’t use burgundy decor in an all dark scheme in a space I had to spend long amounts of time in. So maybe a library I use an hour or two a day, or a bar or restaurant where you step in for a meal. I can enjoy the moody, plush ambiance for a while and then step out into brighter spots.
Break The Burgundy:
If I had to spend long hours of time in a space, I’d prefer to add some other colours along with the burgundy.
I love how the deep blue keeps the moody feel I associate with the colour, while the grey sofa, light wall hanging, pale wooden flooring and white ceiling lighten it all up.
Also loving how it combines with this mustard shade. The gold makes the burgundy look rich without making the room dark and moody.
Burgundy With White:
My favourite way to use ‘Awakening’ though, is with white. The deep richness of the colour stands out beautifully against the white. Yet the white lightens and brightens up the space.
Loved it in this bathroom too. The white door frame, basin, towel, floor and skirting, all fully awaken the ‘Awakening’!
And I loved how it’s teamed with blush, gold and beige here to make such a soft vignette.
Burgundy Ceiling:
If you’re going mostly white, I thought the ceiling was a great place to use this colour too. It makes a simple space look so much more dramatic.
I love how the soft powder blue and gold are breaking the burgundy here.
I would make sure there is enough natural light in the space and the ceilings are not too low before going in for this option.
Burgundy Decor Accents:
I also might not want to go too bold with this already bold colour. Then I would use it in little accents.
The curtains and cushions in this room add that little bit of glamour to contrast the rustic brick wall.
More burgundy curtains here, adding colour to the peachy pink blanket. Together they make this all white bedroom so bright!
One burgundy sofa in an otherwise neutral room adds all the glamour you need.
Along with furniture, add a hint of the colour to your artwork.
Or a beautiful rug. Such a pretty addition to this neutral room.
Burgundy Table Decor:
When I was searching burgundy decor on Pinterest, I found burgundy tablescapes really caught my eye. Even just a touch of burgundy seems to give any tablescape a rich luxuriousness.
A simple napkin with gold cutlery on an all white table…
A touch of glamour with simple sheer fabric on the backs of the chairs…
Or even just a single rose. That’s all you need to make a beautiful burgundy tablescape.
